Those who have visited Tufts

What is it like? I've heard VERY mixed reviews- either people love it or hate it. But no one really knows why. Anyone have any thoughts about the college after visiting it?

I toured Tufts last week and loved it. I guess it kinda depends on who you are. I liked it because I could relate to the people I saw there. But, I come from a wealthy background and am white and male. I could see others not liking it as much.

I hate to add to your confusion but my d did not like Tufts at all (hate is too strong a word) and we don't know why. As a comparison to other "Tufts like schools"- she liked U. of Rochester and CMU very much. When I asked her what it was about Tufts she didn't like, all I could get was a shrug.

We visited and my S too didn't like it and ended up not applying. I recall what he didn't like about it: too suburban, he thought it would be closer to Boston. The area is residential and he wanted more of an urban feel, but of course that was just him; this could be a plus for someone else. Also he didn't like the long walk to the train station that takes you into the city. Of course this is based on a half day's first impressions, personally I liked it.

I visited tufts last year and i hated it. Its on a hill so be prepared to walk up and down the hill every day. On top of that its really only good in like 2 areas, niether of which I am interested in. People really over estimate it, calling it "baby harvard" and **** like that when its not even close. The campus vibe was also pretty weak.

panda- what are the 2 areas it is good in?

i live outside boston and have been to tufts several times, tufts looks very similar to many other ne schools. brick buildings, safe homie vibe etc. but its not a city school. its the burbs baby, so dont think your guna be in an urban environment. to me personally i dunno, it almost seems too safe. but its deffinatly the type of place you'll LOVE if you go into it thinking you'll love it. but then again, if you think you'll hate it, you prob will.

I visited Tufts this Spring and absolutely loved it. It was what I had always pictured as a new england college. The dorms were really cool, they school seemed close knit, and everyone I met was cool. I am definately going to apply

it reminded me of a high school

The reviews were mixed in my house. I wasn't crazy about it and I thought that my D would not like it (I really can't put my finger on it but I really didnot like the up and down hill aspects, and I too expected it to be closer to Boston). However she did and even applied.

i second that ^

*that it reminded me of HS

I didn't like Tufts when I visited it either. There were no real selling points to the school that made me want to further consider it, and the people I met seemed very apathetic about going there. I ended up not applying. But I did visit BC the next day and loved it, and eventually applied there...

I didn't hate it, but I definitely didn't love it. Maybe seeing it on the same trip as Brown and Amherst put it in perspective, as I loved almost everything about those two, but I was just not impressed with Tufts. The campus wasn't cohesive, nothing at all stood out, and none of the people I saw seemed... well, excited to be there. I could still see myself going there, and I think I'll apply, but it's not at (or very near) the top of my list.

Tufts-no school spirit.

Tufts may not have much school spirit in the sports sense (considering the only football game people normally attend is homecoming), but that in no way means that we do not have spirit as an institution. Walking around campus you will see students sporting Tufts gear ALL the time. People are happy to be there and definitely show it.

A good example is from a trip I recently took with 30 Tufts students to Israel- this prorgam had students from all over the world, and hundreds of colleges/universities throughout the US, and "Team Tufts" easily had 10 times as much spirit as any other school. And we're not just talking other division III schools- but schools like Ohio State, Florida, Tulane, Michigan...you get the point. Anyway, we were constantly so cohesive as a group and so proud of our school that the other schools eventually just stopped trying to compete against us and joined us. And our group definitely represents the school as a whole. GO JUMBOS!!!!!!

two thumbs down at our house....but, really don't know why. Everything that was presented at the info session and tour was upbeat and positive, but neither S nor I felt great about it; definitely not the "I could spend the next four years of my life here" feel, at least for my S.

But, I know of others that just love the school and its programs. Visit if you can.

I loved it when I went during my first tour. I loved it when I went to the Open House, and loved it even more during my four years there ('03 alum).

In terms of spirit - GoJumbos nailed it. You'll never see huge crowd of Tufties out at a Saturday morning football game (why, when SoundBites is right near there and there's sledding down the hill and we all went to bed at 3 am anyway?), but everyone really loves the experience.

A lot of the people I know who liked it while they were there really miss it now, saying that they didn't realize how good they had it. :) There's also a group that really loves the friends that they still have - one person noted that her sister, who went to another excellent school, just didn't meet as nice people there. Oh, and meeting new Tufts alums is great... you all start bonding. I'll never forget meeting other Jumbos at law school and having one of them say during a club meeting that it was a long time since he had been in a room with so many Tufts students and was thrilled. Two of us do alum interviews.

TUFTS STRONG AREAS are premed and IR maybe, they have an entirely seperate school for international relations. In other words, if you want to be a doctor but can't get into an ivy, go to tufts.

EDIT:
Because, if you are good enough to get into an ivy, tufts will reject you =P.

i'll go there for dental school perhaps, undergrad na, didn't like it.
