Thanks red! That’s exactly what I did for this year. Didn’t get accepted… But got waitlisted! Better than rejected haha. But I definitely used what I learned from last year to help me in my application process this year

I don’t think this is accurate. While Exeter and Andover (and SAS?) end up with about a 50/50 FA/FP mix, they both accept more FP than FA students. (Yield is bound to be higher for FA students, so the final FA/FP ratio doesn’t really reflect the ratio of FA/FP students accepted.)

Also, there aren’t many schools who even come close to a 50/50 FA/FP split. Last year, for example, SPS and Groton gave FA to 37% of their students. Again, one can safely assume that, given yield, both schools probably accepted fewer than 37%.

So I think Neato and others are being realistic to suggest that FA is the major reason why many otherwise well-qualified candidates are denied admission.

Thanks, this thread really helped me out.

(If anyone’s interested…)
like prepschoolseeker, i was a newbie to the whole boarding school idea and just applied to the top 10 schools for the 10th grade (yeah i know, crazy.) I was a decent student - all a’s, good ec’s, 2 sports, a lot of comm. service, and a lot of good rec’s. i was kind of confident about getting in. the downer was that i had pretty bad ssat scores and i needed fa (overall 61% ssat.) in the end, i got rejected from 8/10, and waitlisted from deerfield and northfield mount hermon (surprisingly the 2 schools ive grown most fond of.)

found out later in the summer that i wasn’t going to get off the waitlist and that i should just give up. had a hard time coping and didnt want to think about boarding school for a while. yet, sometime in october it hit me how much i wanted to go and how close i was to acceptance.

so yeah, now its november 11th, and im officially re-applying to deerfield and nmh as a 11th grader. thought about repeating a grade, but no… my credentials have gotten better though - all a’s, joined a lot of clubs and school activities im interested in, maybe playing varsity hockey this year, jv lax, music director at my church, more community service hours (total so far ive got 3560), and yeah other stuff too. im taking the ssat this december, hopefully doing better. and yeah i just really hope (and kind of am confident) that ill make it this year. please reply if u have comments, advice, etc.
