Thou Shalt Not Chance

"Chance me" threads irritate me! Look kids:

Unless you're completely out of touch with reality, our opinion's as good as yours.

If you want stats, look at the official decisions threads. That's what they're for.

RD has been stickied. Here is the ED thread:

Have confidence in yourself! Don't rely on some internet stranger to make you feel capable of getting into your dream school.

I dunno if anyone else feels the same way, but I guess this is my collective reply to all the chance me threads in this forum.

ehh, seeing as I was one of those irritating kids only a few months ago, I tend to see their side as well. Chance threads are one of those irrational occurrences that fly in the face of “rational thought”. I think most people who post chance threads are smart enough to realize that what people say on the internet means absolutely nothing, and that sometimes the exact opposite of what some one says will happen. Its an emotional thing, when you make a chance thread, and someone tells you that you have a good shot, it simply eases the stress and worry, but again, its not an affirmation of your real “chances”. The chance thread is something that just needs to be tolerated, no matter how much logic you throw out there, poeple, including me, only realize how stupid chance threads are, after decisions have come out.

But I do agree with what has been posted, do read the decisions threads, those really give you a clue as to what happens, it can also scare the crap out of you.

And if you do chance, make it organized and neat, nothing worse than reading through some jumbled mess of scores, gpa, and ec’s.

Also, really do assess your writing ability and recommendation letters, almost every chance thread I have ever read has stated “really good writer”, and “awesome recs”. Ask yourself if those things are really true, since its not a quantitative thing, people tend to overestimate their abilities. I thought my recs would be great, I got to read them when i asked for scholarship recommendations, they were both generic and bland, one was just plainly unoriginal, a regurgitation of my academic resume.

Thats my 2 cents.

To add to what TheWikiMan said, please do remember that the CC population is likely more ambitious than average, even when it comes to top school applicants. So take the results threads with a grain of salt as well.

Come on, chance threads are fun. you know it. xD

True that, the average acceptance rates on the CC results threads for top schools are usually far above the actual acceptance rates for the schools. I think the Penn ED CC results thread had an acceptance rate of close to 60%. So I guess another way to look at it is that if you compare well to those on that thread who were accepted, then you might have a better “chance” at good news come decision time.

You know who has the best “chance” predictions in the world? Eric J. Furda!
He’s like dead on at whether you can get in or not. Maybe y’all that want a “chance” should send your stats to him. He can be contacted

That’s what I did.

sigh Yeah I guess it’s easier for me to say now that I’m in.

Also, I’m 99% sure it’s not a good idea to contact the Dean of Admissions with a “Chance Me” letter.

Who said it has to be a letter. You could send in your “moving, take about ____” essay, your basic information, your “spectacular because she knew me for 4 years” counselor essay, your “glowing because I had them for 4 years in the class room and as a coach” teacher’s recs, your before “should I retake” SAT score and the after retake SAT scores, and your why penn essay.
That will provide them with the best picture of who you are. It’s the best way to chance yourself. Who knows you might get a response telling you of your chance in around February

<.< Are you serious?

Is like no one getting the joke?

Gunit5’s suggested materials are called drumroll please your APPLICATION.

That’s the best (and only) way of knowing if you’ll be accepted - by applying.

lightbulb moment
ahhhhhhhhh facepalm

facepalm

walks away in shame.

ok, I shalt not chance.

@TheWikiMan, not so sure that CC has a higher-than-average accept rate, could be that a lot of the rejected kids preferred not to post and advertise it. Regardless of the fact that it’s far from the end of the world, I know from my friends that it seems like the end of the world for a while. I was one of those lucky bastards that got in ED and didn’t have to go through it personally but I can definitely sympathize.

bump 10 10 10

hinthint Guys just work on your essays, go do something productive over the summer, and chill!

Great suggestion blueeee…

Thanks! But I fear this may not stop em.

Blueee…I know. MommaJ wrote the following a parent post thought it was so true:

“The most bizarre posts are the ones that say “Chance me and I’ll chance back”–if you can’t make a good assessment of your own situation, why would anyone trust you for an assessment of theirs? I wish the mods would banish all the “chance me” threads to the “Chances” board so the chancing folks can waste their time in one place.”

@CalifLaxMom: hahaha like it! (wish they have this ‘like’ button to like those nice posts) It creeped me when i read that post title…
