Thought B1G was silly? Check UC new look

Really? Did all talented designers turn UC down? Or did they hire a group of middle schoolers and gave them crayons?

University of California introduces a modern logo - San Jose Mercury News

I never miss an opportunity to deride the hippies, but you got to admit that they keep on throwing softballs over the middle of the plate. This belongs at ToysRuS in the baby section.

PS This still does not top that B1G logo.

It isn’t that new a look, as the logo has been around for a while. Looks like you are late in noticing.

Does that make a difference?

The article quoted is not from a while ago. That is the story. If you think that the new image is not so recent because it adorns the new admissions pages or the Onward California, so be it … does not make it more attractive!

Seriously, it’s eww!

Wow, are they going to put that thing on the UC diplomas? If so I’m glad I’ve already got mine.

The old seal was not exciting, but it was at least dignified and timeless. The new logo, while perhaps currently hip in someone’s opinion, in ten years will look as dated as silly bell-bottom pants.

The triumph of style over substance.

Doesn’t look like a univ logo. Looks like a logo for a toy brand.

Yudof has been one of the worst UC presidents. Birgeneau and Gene Block have also mightily damaged the standing and reputation of the UC System.

Where is Governor Reagan when you need him?

Reminds me of when NBC replaced the classic peacock with the “more contemporary” red and blue “N,” only to go back to the peacock.

Did a 5 year old draw the 2nd one?

At least the B1G logo is for a SPORTS conference…so it’s ok to be less dignified. But the UC logo is supposed to represent a public university system that is likely the best in the US.

I’ve posted on cc several times that the Univ of California is being run by folks with much lower smart’s than the kids that they admit. Was there no little kid in the group that could state the obvious to anyone with a set of eyes: butt-ugly. ‘this emperor has no clothes?’

What I find particularly problematic, however, is that in a time of massive budget cuts and tuition increases, UC still has funds for an 'in house design team."

The article says that the old logo will still appear on “official documents” so I guess the new one won’t be on diplomas. But it’s definitely an eyesore, I agree. That logo wouldn’t make me want to go to UC.

My first impression was that the fading C represented affordability. ;-)

I’ve posted on cc several times that the Univ of California is being run by folks with much lower smart’s than the kids that they admit

that’s not surprising. the CTA is filled with teachers with much lower smarts than the students who are attending. Ugh…the lowest SAT scores on campus can often be found in the College of Education.

that thing belongs on a diploma factory i.e. U of Phoenix

Or Crisis or budget Cuts. When good times return, they might have enough ink in the printer to finish the C letter.

Fwiw, the designer --Vanessa Correa-- has 500,000 followers on Pinterest.

Everyone can have an off-day. She might have decided to grade herself with the logo. :)

PS The new letter style used by Stanford on the athletic gear is also far from successful. It seems that the entire Bay area is getting Hollywoodized!

if this branding works and attracts a lot more wealthy OOS’ers, it will just go to show that PT Barnum was right: there’s one borne every minute. :D

Comments from a Cal sportsblog:

Perhaps if the California voters would not have passed a tax increase, the so-called design team would’ve been laid off before they could have published this monstrosity. (Unless it’s really a joke fostered on UC by Stanford pranksters!)

I agree the new logo is lacking. My understanding is the original Tiffany-designed University seal is not going away and will still appear on diplomas. This is the logo for the UC system on its system website and general communications.

It’s not meant to be used with individual campus names, as their “style documentation standard” states.

Pink and orange? Let there be light dissolved into carnival stripes?! Pretty lame.

I like it. It looks like a comet and serves to remind us of the meteoric rise and fall of the quality of education in CA.

Our long national nightmare is over!
