thoughts on a special case?

ok, so to make a long story short, i live in maryland but i am now considered in-state for UVA. my dad works in VA and pays something like over 50% of his taxes to the state of Virginia, so he wrote a letter to the school and included a tax form, etc. and they wrote back saying that i am "considered a Virginian for all educational purposes."

well now i really want to go to UVA, but I want to hear what you all think about my chances...do you think this status helps/hinders my chances?

i can post stats later, if you need more info. thanks!

Being in state helps QUITE a lot.

Its a huge boost to your chances. In state is much easier to get in.

That said, I still have no idea if you'll get in, lol

thanks! i guess i was also wondering if this means my application will be lumped in with the Northern VA folks (whom UVA have a limit on for admissions) or if i will be in a seperate category?

in case this helps...
GPA: 3.74 UW, 4.39 W
SAT: 2190 (700 CR, 760 M, 730 W)
ACT: 32 (35 English, 34 Reading, 30 Math, 30 Science)
SAT II's: 750 US Hist, 740 Math I, 690 Lit.

-feature editor of award-winning school paper
-service trip to North Dakota Indians
-focus on history
-work at historical home
-summer program at William & Mary
-300+ community service hours
etc.

you have a fine shot

sigh Its no more difficult for nova kids to get in

Ask the person who told you that where they heard it and report back. I'm always interested in seeing who the new experts on UVa admisison are.

You're either a Virginian or a non-Virginian. That's all.

I've heard a lot about how people from Northern Virginia (esp. Fairfax County/City) can have a bad time getting in...

In fact, some people have told me I'm probably more likely to get into Princeton than UVA.

yeah kcarls, ive heard the same thing, which is why im wondering if they will consider me in a completely seperate category, or if i'll be with the N VA kids (because i live across the bridge from them) or what. very confusing...

^ You guys do realize that Dean J is a college rep from U Va, don't you? I would guess she would know more about it than your "experts" you heard from.

No college "officially" has a quota. But, they could most likely fill an entire incoming class with NoVa kids some years. Will they? Heck no. Does that mean they have a quota? If you want to interpret it that way, but there's no set limit on admitted students from certain areas. Does being IS, from anywhere in VA, help? Tremendously.

some people are idiots

If your grades put you in the top 10% of your class or are comparable to the grades of students from your school who consistently get into top 25ish universities, then you will probably get in. Good luck! If I were you, I'd narrow my search to UVA or W&M unless you're in the running for substantial financial aid...but even then, it's not incredibly likely that you'd get in anywhere substantially better than UVA/W&M.
