[FAQs - USC Undergraduate Admission](http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/faq/admission_admitted.html)

Wow, after reading that, I could defer my admission from spring 2012 to fall 2012. This makes things a bit more interesting…

To uscalumandmom – Last year not all kids that were business or undeclared were bumped to Fall Admissions. My D had 5 friends (all from different Bay Area schools) that were either business or undeclared. All tried everything possible for Fall, but ended up going as Spring Admits. It is accurate that Annenberg would be the most difficult.

But I will say that all of these 5 kids are thrilled to now be at USC! Housing was difficult for the 3 girls, as they had to go where ever something was available. And if Greek Life is important, the girls will have to wait until next Fall to rush, and not as many sophomores are considered. For the boys, both that my daughter knows got into nice dorms. Boys can Rush fraternities in the Spring, so both got into the frats they wanted.

If the Spring Admit has friends that were Fall admits, then it makes the transition even easier. My D was very happy to see friends and introduce them to other kids.

To: kdos – Yes your D is into Annenberg! It is a fantastic school with lots of personal attention. The first semester is only general ed classes anyway, so your D could take classes at a community college in the fall.

@USCMom84 thanks for creating a group! unfortunately your link doesnt work and i cant find the group you created on facebook!!

I’m having technical difficulties, but I will keep working on it! Keep checking for it! Thanks!

I tried creating a “group” but ran into problems. So I set up a “Fan Page” that everyone can “like”. Does anyone else know a lot about FB groups/pages and would be willing to set one up? I will moderate if that is an issue… In the meantime here’s a link:

Thanks.

Well this makes the decision a whole lot harder. I would’ve attended USC for sure if admitted for fall

theres a group for spring admits guys! feel free to join and meet other springs!!

Just as my son was getting used to the idea of being a spring admit (mid May), he was moved to fall admission. He was a poli sci major/music minor. He was able to get the housing he wanted and participate in the Thematic Option honors program. He received a phone call from admissions offering fall admission without an appeal.

I would be more than happy to make the Facebook page. My parents are figuring out all the finances and stuff right now (because I’m assuming I will not get any financial aid money other than loans) so I’m 90% sure I will be going to USC as a spring admit. From what I’ve heard, it wounds like a pretty good deal. Save some money, take some classes at CC and get to know people who are also spring admits and have an automatic group once you go to USC. Plus… who wouldn’t want to be a Trojan!? Then we could go to football games together still and feel like a part of the c/o 2015 and then be all set for when we go in January!

Here’s the page:
Join if you are a potential Trojan or if you know that you will be attending next year! :)

Oh and it made me add a member to the group when I created it so I added my brother… He’s still in middle school so just ignore him for now :)

My son started at USC as a freshman in the fall of 2010. He has a friend who is majoring in a science who was a spring admit but by June she had been bumped to fall. He had another friend who was a spring admit who did not get bumped to fall. That friend started college at an excellent national university (not as highly ranked as USC, but still excellent) with the intent to transfer to USC in the spring. (USC has articulation agreements with hundreds of colleges, many of which are four-year colleges.) However, as the first semester ended, his friend decided he liked his current school enough that he didn’t want to go through the hassle of a mid-year transfer. Perhaps this is why USC seems to encourage spring admits to enroll in junior colleges, where they are much less likely to become attached to their school. If my son had been a spring admit, he definitely would have accepted as USC was his first (and only) choice. If my son had been a spring admit, I would have encouraged him to spend his first semester as a visiting (not regular) student at a very highly ranked university in our hometown (we lived in a major city not in California) and then start USC in the fall. I did look into this in case he was a spring admit and found that the local university (which is a little more highly ranked than USC) would have accepted him with the understanding that he was just visiting and had no right to continue there after one semester. Overall, I don’t think a student is missing much by taking one semester of GE courses at a junior college or somewhere else other than USC. According to my son, most of the students and most of the teachers dislike the GE courses and the two that he has taken so far have been rather boring and much less challenging than the AP courses he took in high school.

So about how many spring admits get bumped to fall admit? And if a person is bumped up, when do they find out?

I called USC admissions to ask about this. They told me two years ago “a lot” were bumped up, last year “just a few” and that there is no way to predict what will happen this year as it depends on how many fall admits accept their offer of admision and which departments end up having space. They will start notifying anyone who is bumped in late May or June and there is no benefit to submitting the non-refundable enrollment deposit prior to June 1 as this doing so will not move you up on the list.

Congratulations to all the Spring admits! First of all, I have been following this forum for a few years now and have read every entry on the stats thread since the 2008 cycle - I have seen absolutely NO difference in the qualifications between Fall and Spring admits - anyone who tells you that Spring admits have lower “stats” is
just
plain
WRONG.

I saw a couple of questions: Rookiemom: yes, you will get your financial aid package before you have to submit your enrollment deposit (assuming you have all your paperwork in, of course).

ukfcra, if you want the “freshman experience,” yes, you can enroll at another 4-year and then move to USC for Spring. You can even receive 1/2 year financial aid at each. (Check with the fina aid departments of BOTH schools to be sure this works correctly).

BDUBYALL, you mention you would prefer you child starts at a 4-year and then transfers to USC if they still prefer USC. You can accomplish that same effect - without the worry of whether they will be admitted as transfers - by using ukfcra"s plan and start at another school in Fall and then move (or don’t move if the kid came to love the other school) to USC in the Spring.

Photomac - you probably can’t live in a USC-owned dorm, but there are literally thousands of apartments steps from USC occupied by USC students - there is no reason you can’t lease one of those (other than the expense) for fall and hang out on campus all you want.

I am SO excited about the option of deferring!!! What a great change. That really opens up the possibilities of a gap year and really *doing *something (I am thinking service , but jobs and stuff would be good, too). Makes your choices even tougher!

Congratulations and GOOD LUCK!

There are both fall and spring involvement and job (for on-campus jobs) fairs – no worries! Everyone’s EC involvement tends to switch around from semester to semester due to their class schedules.

So what is USC’s target enrollment for the class of 2015? I heard it was like 3000 but I’m not positive about this.

My son was a spring admit to SCA in 2008, and just as he was getting excited about spending fall semester camping in the Amazon jungle, he received a call from his admissions person, telling him he was in for fall. This was in mid-May, I think. He was ecstatic, of course, but really had been warming up to the idea of a huge adventure before starting at USC. He had enough AP credits that he didn’t need to spend a semester doing college work, so he planned to just travel. Of course he ended up having a great time starting in the fall, got excellent housing, and was happy to be able to do Thematic Option.

He has a friend - also in the film school - who was offered a bump up but stayed with spring admit. It just fit his situation better. Both of them are doing great at USC, and the friend who started in the spring has never reported feeling awkward or friendless.

There are no stats on how many get bumped up. When my son was in the situation, the admissions people did say they would be more likely to bump someone in a program that had strict sequential course requirements, like architecture (maybe applies to engineering too, I don’t know). But that year, there seemed to be a number of applicants on CC who did get moved up.

Congrats to all of you! USC is a fantastic option.

So housing is a big issue for spring admits? Would it be recommended to seek out your own on-campus housing through social networking, ect.?

My daughter studied abroad this Fall and returned to campus for Spring semester - she was worried about making housing arrangements, but it turned out that there were lots of places available in Spring. You would probably be very safe in entering the housing lottery (I can’t quite remember, but I think Spring admits enter the lottery in July - does that sound right?), waiting for your assignment in December, and if there was a problem with your assignment there would still be apartments in the area available even in December. It feels stressful because it seems a bit last-minute, but everyone ends up somewhere.
