…For example, the rank in class, strength of curriculum, percentage of students who go on to a four-year college, and the overall impact that the student makes on a daily basis within his/her high school community are just a few of the tidbits of information that I’m looking for as I evaluate these items…</p>

<p>…My FAVORITE component of the application comes next and this is my review of the essay and short answer questions. These are my favorite components of a student’s application because the responses to these questions are really the only aspect of the application that students have control over. As a result, these responses allow me the opportunity to understand the student a bit more deeply. The topics that students choose to write about are amazing. Some essays are hilarious, others make me tear up, and then there are those that could have used a little more work. I received a comic book last year as a college essay, which was really cool…and a few of my absolute favorite college essays include one student who was afraid of the Chuck-E-Cheese mouse that chased him through the restaurant, and another student who went to his middle school prom without a tie. There is no particular topic that we’re looking for as essay readers and as long as you’re using your authentic voice in your write-ups and talking about yourself in some way, then you should be good to go with your essay…
