Thoughts on College Application List

UMASS is likely a bit more competitive (again, may be splitting hairs here), but we think she’s ruled it out because a) it’s too big, and b) since it’s the in-state flagship a lot of kids from her school will be going there.

Would not mind the reduced expense but things didn’t work out well there for her brother because of the size so we understand.

The course offerings in criminology and criminal justice at UMASS also seem more limited.

So…our daughter decided on URI after going to the Accepted Students Day.

Don’t think it was anything in particular about the events that day, aside from the Honors program presentation the rest of the day seemed a little free form compared to other schools we went back to.

It all boiled down to feel I think…and it seems like our daughter wants a larger (but not too big) school. There will be some challenges to going to a larger school, but that’s what this whole college thing is about sometimes.

My son is finishing his freshman year at URI. He is very happy there after a rough start. Adjusting to college life is difficult no matter where they end up. He will be an RA next year. There is so much to do in and around the area. He has taken trips to Boston, Providence, Newport, the beaches etc. One of the perks of the Honors program is that you get to register early for classes. You need to take an honors course every 3rd semester to stay active within it. I believe it ends up being a minor if you obtain the necessary credit requirements. Best of luck to all of your kids. It is an exciting time for you all! My son is OOS and is a civil engineering major.
