Thoughts on CSUCI new Mechatronics Engineering program??? Anyone in the field or applied?

Hi everyone,

This is a brand new program this Fall. It still doesn’t have ABET yet, but that takes a few years. It doesn’t have a track record yet of course either. DS would be giving up ME at Chico and possibly others, so there is an opportunity cost. Anybody apply? Anyone know anything besides of what I have already read on the school website ???

Can’t help you with more information, but the program certain seems interesting, and the fact there there’s only a cohort of 24 would indicate a more personalized education.

Yes, I agree that is good. But there is also risk as well. It is difficult to determine how much with out being in the field myself.

Man that does sound interesting but I think your concern is warranted. Looking at the website, the degree itself is still pending approval.

You guys might want to follow the “Request more information” link and ask about backup plans. Ask if there is a major or majors that students in the program can be guaranteed that they can switch to without loss of time or credits if the major isn’t approved by the time they reach their junior year. It’s important that your son be happy with taking one of those alternate degrees if it comes to that.

But wow it sounds cool. I want to enroll in it myself.

That is the only engineering program offered at the school. They only have one engineering faculty member. It seems like a bit of a risk to join a school for the first year they offer any engineering courses.

I’ve been following the program from afar as it started with talks a few years ago. DS was also admitted into Chico and they have an established program which already has ABET approval. The CI program may have more hand holding for students because its new, but I have seen pilot program fall flat. Although they aren’t referring to this as a “pilot”. Yes, this is the very one and only engineering program there so far. And, they are still looking for faculty. It is a risk, but I wonder if that’s how all the ABET programs started at CSUs? And if any failed?
