Thoughts on DirecTV/CTV

Does anybody have any thoughts or opinions on the DirecTV service provided to students through CTV?

While I believe it is is worth it, do you have any experience against it?

Some of my friends have it, but they barely have enough time to watch TV as it is. They're pretty much wasting $50 each a month =</p>

In fact, in my dorm, there's a TV with fully functioning cable that anyone can watch at any time - so, I'd have to say that it's really not worth it.

In your dorm or the dorm level?

well I have this in my room. I am one of those pathetic people who has "their shows" and so I carve out time in my schedule for television viewing.

one thing that disappointed me was that I had to get the second package up; the cheapest one didn't have some of the channels I particularly wanted.
it took a while to set up. I read everything carefully and then played phone tag with the confirmation telephone call for about 3 days, because during orientation it's not like you're in your room long enough to wait for a call that could happen any time within a range of hours. you are supposed to be in your room so you can make sure it has worked, and you need to have your TV on.
also, I am not able to get at least one of the channels I thought I was supposed to have. I have not looked into this because I have no critical need of it, but it was kind of annoying.

also, for about a week, it must have been during the RNC (just so you have a timeframe) my TV would "digitize" its image once in a while, especially when clips were changing. the sound would go out when this happened. online it told me that this had to do with adjusting or orienting satellites but I certainly wasn't in the position to do anything about Cornell's satellites. one day it was particularly bad and I asked some people watching a different channel in the TV room whether they knew what I was talking about and it wasn't affecting them then, but they recognized it from happening before there. I didn't watch TV for a week for unrelated reasons and by that time the trouble seemed to have abated. however, sometime last week I was watching a show and the sound stopped for a few seconds...but other than that it has been fine for weeks. everything was thankfully perfect for the Emmys.

so those are my basic annoyances. I still am glad I have it because, well, I have been able to watch my shows when they first come on, and they are a big way of calming down from whatever tasks or worries concern me through the day. if you can loudly proclaim you enjoy watching television then I think it's worth it.

Their plans make me angry.

The cheapest one only has the networks(abc, nbc, fox, pbs, cbs) and then a bunch of obscure channels that nobody watches, it doesn't even come with cnn. To get all the major cable channels such as usa, fx, commedy central, scifi, tbs, etc you need to pay for the more expensive 50 dollar a month plan.

That said I don't have it and just use a combination of dc++ and streaming from the channels website to get all my tv needs.

Doesn't DC++ and streaming kill your bandwith limit?

dc++ doesn't effect your bandwith, streaming uses it up fairly quickly, but if you only stream a few shows a week you'll be fine

not worth it. i usually just watch tv now online when i have time

Are there any sports bars around Ithaca to catch NFL games? That is all I would care about if I get accepted since you can get shows on DC++.

there are sports bars and stuff but that's really for the 21+ crowd...

if you live on north campus the big games are usually viewed at the Robert Purcell Community Center's big screen...

or most dorms have at least a tv (often a big screen) to watch these in...

Benchwarmers and Uncle Joe's are downtown sports bars. Uncle Joe's has the most amazing wings and their blue cheese sauce is to die for.

there will be a tv in your floors lounge where you can watch nfl games

my dorm doesn't have floor lounges, just a tv room.
