Im thinking of applying to Emma Willard as an international student, and I cant visit the campus can someone who's been on a tour or goes there maybe fill me in?

Whats the school campus like, classrooms and dorms? and this is a random one but what about the dorm bathrooms?
Are the girls there really preppy? and also is it really hard to get financial aid as I would need quite a bit..

Thanks! :D

Hello Maybe2013. My D is in her third year at Emma. She is not what I think of as “preppy” (though who would admit that they are???), though my definition of preppy is about 30 years old. In my day, preppy indicated a wealthy-Lacoste-wearing WASP. Emma seems to draw a wide range of social, economic, geographic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds so it would be hard to classify the girls as being anything other than “a little of everything.”

The campus is breathtaking. It was featured in two mainstream movies that I know of: “Scent of a Woman” and “The Emperor’s Club.” The city of Troy appears to be coming back from an economic downturn, and while not picturesque, we have come to love the area… some of the best food you can find outside of NY and Boston :)

Feel free to PM me.

@maybe2013 Emma Willard’s campus is absolutely stunning! I felt like I was at a castle. I went to the open house this November. The campus life is vibrant and amazing. The girls are perky and friendly. Classroom discussions are practically student lead. The teachers are incredibly kind too. My mother attended Emma over twenty years ago and the girls are still as down to earth as they were then. The dorms are not huge, but are a sufficient size. The bathrooms are of an older style, at least they were last time I visited, but renovations are constantly occurring on campus, so they might be more up to date.

thanks for your replies they helped! Im quite nervous to apply because I havent visited and i feel like im just walking into something blindly… haha. Also I’d be applying for the 11th grade so I dont want to be like the only new girl… :(

The open house went into the aspect of entering Emma Willard in years other than freshman. The girls themselves said that they can’t even remember what year their best friends came! They said that the transition is usually takes a couple weeks, but after a while everyone fits in quite happily. I know a girl who transferred in, in her senior year and her transition was easy and simple.

WCMOM1958 is absolutely right, the girls are “a little bit of everything”. Our daughter goes from preppy to athletic to musical all in one day. She loves her classes, really likes her teachers, works hard and has some really great friends, it’s unfortunate you can’t visit, can you have an interview via skype?

The campus is beautiful, pictures don’t do it justice. The bathrooms are older but the showers private, the rooms are all various sizes, it’s really luck of the draw.

I’ll second (or third?) what WCMOM and Maui have stated. GG (a freshman) is over the moon for Emma, and loves that the girls are from everywhere, and have such a diversity of interests. She feels it’s a “home from home.” BTW she’s not particularly preppy.

The campus is beautiful— grand AND cozy at the same time. Which pretty well sums up Emma – a study in contrasts, and so much the better for it.

Atypically for U.S. boarding schools, Emma does offer FA to international students (though it is limited). Best of luck to you if you do decide to apply.

@mauiluver yeah i think they can do interviews via Skype but Im new to this whole process so Im not really sure what an interview would involve :s

@girlgeekmom thanks! the campus looks amazing! I think I might try and apply for a scholarship and or FA.

Maybe2013, you should contact admissions (I’d suggest by phone) and let them know of your interest and request an interview via skype as you are International and will not be touring. The interview process is used for the Admissions officer to get to know you as well as for you to get to know them and ask any questions you have and also answer questions they have for you.

@mauiluver ok great thank you!

Where else are you applying to? If you are looking for all girls consider Westover as well. DC wanted co-ed by once she saw it she had to add it to her list. Lovely school…

We did not apply to Emma Willard as they do not have ice hockey, but I loved the look of the school and everything I read about it…

@danlincou ok will do thanks! Im not definite about any other schools yet, i think I might apply to a co-ed as well maybe.
