Thoughts on Fordham

I visited Fordham-Lincoln Center and Rose Hill this past Friday. I'll be an incoming transfer student to Rose Hill if I am admitted, but I really just wanted to see what the campuses were like. I'm from Southern NJ and just wanted to give my opinion.

Lincoln Center:

pros -
_ great location
_ amazing dorms/suites even for freshmen

cons -
_ no undergrad business school
_ very small. there really isn't much of a campus life here. i'm assuming there's a lot of commuters, but if you want the whole "college experience", you should go to rose hill

Rose Hill:

pros -
_ small and intimate campus setting (reminded me of a smaller version of BC's campus)
_ newly renovated dining hall
_ new fitness equipment
_ very friendly people
_ ram van service from LC to RH

cons -
_ it's in the bronx (even though there's campus security and the campus is safe. if you just walk out the gates, it gets pretty dangerous at night)
_ it's pretty far from manhattan (ie. times square). i thought it would be relatively close, but the subway took even longer than the ram van. i would not suggest taking the subway from manhattan into bronx. it takes very long and it drops you off a couple of blocks away from campus. there is a bus, but we couldn't find it and had to walk. i definitely recommend taking the ram van to LC and taking the subway from there
_ NO diversity. well, i'm asian and i think i saw a total of 1 other asian person throughout my whole stay at rose hill. i also didn't see any other minority groups represented. i think around 3-4 african american students, but that's really about it.

What do you guys think?

Fordham is extremely African American, from what I see

JL, you said that LC really has no campus life, which isn't a problem for me cause I'm commute if I get in. But, what about the actual building(s), are they nice? Well kept?

Also, are there places to study/read, etc?

the actual building was nice, but i could see myself getting sick of it after a semester.

as for places to study/read, there was a decent sized cafe and when the weather is nice, u could go outside and sit at the tables, but thats about it. i peeked in the library, and it was nothing special. i wouldn't be encouraged to study in there at all.

yeah, the library does look like a prison. but everyone tells me that you wouldn't study there anyway. you would study in, say, ny public library and such. there are so many places (that are beautiful, convenient, etc) in manhattan that are great to study in, so it shouldnt be a problem in any way.

thanks for the info guys!

JL...i totally agree with your description...fordham did remind me of a mini BC and as far as the LC campus goes, the buildings were just plain, square, concrete buildings, like any other in NYC.....they were small and just around other plain buildings (I mean in the immediate vicinity...it's close to lincoln center which is def. a plus)

Fordham library(RH) is very beautiful and a nice place to study. One of the best I have seen.

I think the Rose Hill campus is absolutely gorgeous. Initially, I was uneasy about the surrounding neighborhood, but as long as common sense is used it should prove to be pretty safe. I hope to dorm in Alumni North or South and my 3rd choice will be Hughes...anyone else? The dorms seem like they're decently sized and clean (thank god!)..my only pet peeve is that there might be floor bathrooms, i'm still a little unclear about which dorms have suites.

Come to Alumni Court South... greatest time- don't let the North people tell you otherwise. It's called "the dirty south" but that's only true of the basement-- us basement creatures are pretty crazy at times. If you enjoy co-ed floors, the third floor is co-ed.

The subway ride can be long because of so many stops. I'm not sure what station you took the subway from to Fordham, but it isn't long depending where you come from. If you are coming to Fordham for Manhattan, I suggest going somewhere else. The Bronx is safe as long as you aren't stupid, especially around Fordham.

Harlem: Why do you suggest going somewhere else if you are going to Fordham for Manhattan? Am I to assume you are speaking strictly about Rose Hill and not Lincoln Center, as Fordham LC is IN manhattan?

Yes, I mean the Rose Hill campus.

i plan to go into manhattan several times a week from rose hill
how long do you consider a "long ride" harlem?
I'm from LI, im used to taking train/subway rides into the city all the time and they never struck me as a burden

I mean long in the NYC sense of the word. The subway ride from 125th st. on the B train to Fordham Road is maybe 15-30 minutes. Not a short ride by any means, atleast to me. Coming from 50th St. is a hell of a lot longer. It depends where you want to go into Manhattan, but it's not a quick ride on the subway by any means. Plus, you might plan on going in all the time, and I don't blame you. But, the ride will be a pain if you don't have a reason to go in, I can assure you that. You will probably find yourself staying in more and more at Fordham and the surrounding area in the Bronx than lugging yourself into Manhattan.

True, but when you want to, can't you just take the RamVan?

Yes. I'm sorry if my comment came off as you will never go to Manhattan, because you will. It's just that the commute, by car or train, is not a quick one, and you will probably get tired of it and start exploring the great places around Fordham instead of going into Manhattan and dropping tons of cash.

dont worry about it, i completely understand.
thats what i hear from other rh students anyway.

but i was just asking out of curiousity, i am actually gonig to be attending lc anyway

but thanks for answering my question! :)

No problem. Lincoln Center is a cool place to live so enjoy.

Thank you.

:)
