I’d love to hear from those with experience at The Frost School in Miami. How is the school culture? Are music students generally serious students? Do they integrate into the university? Is it a total party school? My D received a very nice offer for VP via a recorded audition but we have not visited nor have we had contact with a professor there. She was also accepted at her dream school (Michigan) but with very little money. Frost would be about half the price so I feel that it is worth serious consideration. Thank you so much for any information!
sopranosings, I sent you a PM.
I don’t know anything specifically about Frost, but I do know that my son who is about to graduate from NEC has worked with many musicians who have gone to Frost and has great respect for the conservatory and the musicians it produces.
One thing to consider (I hate to mention this because it is a wild-card) is to think about weather. As you know (or maybe you do not know) Miami is doomed. Four years is a short amount of time. But it is something I know I would consider if I were about to send a child there…and that might just be my own neuroses.
@StacJip Thank you so much for your reply. What do you mean about Miami? I’ve been to Florida several times but never Miami.
Well increased flooding and more powerful storms/hurricanes and increase in severe heat waves. I am not sure anywhere in the US is entirely safe from severe weather these days …but it is something I take into account when thinking about location.
My son was accepted for jazz piano. We visited for his audition and really loved it. He got more personalized attention at Frost than at any of his three current contenders, and I suspect that’s an indication of what his four years would be like. Your studio teacher is also your advisor, which I think is fantastic. The faculty and staff are wonderful, the campus is gorgeous, the cognate system sounds like a fun way to get your gen eds. Our visit made ME want to enroll. I would strongly recommend that you visit and see for yourselves.
Don’t laugh but one reason I didn’t pursue OCU was because of the increased risk of earthquakes due to fracking … and I don’t think Oklahoma building code is up to snuff when it comes to being earthquake-proof.
But back to Miami - I think it’s a well respected conservatory, and it is a beautiful campus. I love Coral Gables.
Don’t take my opinion because my d. is going to California My sister-in-law lives near by and assures me that “once she becomes a California girl and an earthquake hits she will just roll over and go back to sleep”. Here’s hoping! But, seriously, wanted to chime in that she has a friend doing VP at Frost, very happy, great opportunities to perform, and loves Coral Gables. She is not into the party scene. I think it’s true anywhere-you find your people.
I can’t speak of Frost in terms of VP, but I know people who went their for Jazz studies and loved it. From what I hear, the music students there are quite serious and Frost is a very competitive admit. You would need to find out about the VP teachers there from those who know, some of the voice parents might know more about the specific teachers and which may be the best.
@StacJip, the kinds of things that may be dooming Miami are not going to happen in the next 4 years, or maybe even 40 years, without getting into the climate change debate (I am far from a denier), the presentation in “an inconvenient truth” was to be blunt, more for its shock value than science. The one thing those who support climate change don’t agree on are specifics, because the models are just that. Miami may face a killer hurricane over the next 4 years, for example, but so might NYC for that matter, the year NYC got hit with Sandy, Miami had a quiet hurricane season, and has been quiet for a while.
If going to Frost means little or no debt and less extending family finances, and the VP teachers check out, I would personally consider it, U Mich is a great school, but is it worth paying that much more? The name in the end isn’t going to matter much, it is going to be how good the teacher is and how well prepared the student is when they move on, you don’t get into an Opera because you have U Mich on your CV, you get in if you can sing well enough in auditions and such.
