Hi there, I was recently accepted as a Kelley Direct Admit, and I would like to hear some student perspectives on the program. I’m not sure if I will go to Indiana yet but it is a top choice for me. I have these two specific questions, but if you’re a Kelley student please share any overall thoughts you have on the program.
How is the academic rigor? I have heard that Kelley is very academically demanding, especially I-Core. Would I be able to have a social life at IU as a Kelley student, or are Kelley students bogged down with classwork all the time?
Does anyone have any insights on the Real Estate major or the Real Estate Club? I am very interested in real estate so I wanted to know how I could explore that within Kelley.
I would say that the workload is manageable. It’s hard to put a number of hours per week on it because you have some weeks with only a couple hours of work all week outside of class. There are also weeks where you might have 2-3 exams and have to work on a group project. You definitely have to work hard those weeks, but it’s still doable even when you have a lot of things to do. I typically study 3-5 hours for major exams even though I didn’t study that much in high school, but I’m pretty confident that would be similar at most colleges. Each class usually only has 2-3 major exams per semester.
I am only a sophomore, so I have not taken I-Core yet. I do know that you have to do a massive case project in about 10 days at the end of the semester, but you don’t have to go to class or do anything else during that time. The rest of I-Core is just like regular classes.
I really like IU and Kelley and I feel like I am getting a solid education here. In general, the professors are good, and I have a solid group of friends that share my interests. That being said, it all depends on what your alternatives are. If you are in-state for a comparable business school, I don’t think Kelley is worth 2-3 times the cost of a similar school. I am in-state, and I’m very happy with my choice. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The rigor is tough some weeks and easy others. You can absolutely have a social life, just have perspective. Some weeks you will have 3 exams, so you’ll have to learn to manage your time. Other weeks you will have nothing.
I am involved in 3 organizations, played intramural sports and had time to study – I just watch tv a lot less in college.

I’m not involved directly with Real Estate, but I know we have a Real Estate Workshop, where they prepare students for the work – definitely look into this.
