Thoughts on McGill Management?

Hi everyone!

I'm a grade 12 student from BC, and I'm applying to business programs for Fall 2008. While doing some research on the internet (browsing the forums and school websites), I came across the website for the Faculty of Management at McGill.

I was intrigued, since though I had heard McGill had quite a prestigious reputation both in Canada and abroad, I had not seen its undergraduate commerce program mentioned very much. (In fact, I had not heard of it until this weekend.)

And whenever it was mentioned and its merit argued on a forum, I could never find a clear consensus. Some praised the program (mentioning how big US companies recruit there), while some bashed it (McGill is underfunded?) and expressed its mediocrity.

Is there anyone in the forums who is attending McGill Management right now? If so, would you care to comment on the program, McGill university, and life in Montreal? Also, in your opinion, how does it compare with a UBC BCom and a Schulich BBA?

Thanks!

I don't know much about it, but I always heard that the difficulty is a joke (it isnt nearly as hard as arts or sciences at mcgill)

ntrp35, I'm in the same position as you right now, and I'm trying to figure out what the hell the deal is with Desautels Faculty of Managament (and I've even been to Montreal twice and took a tour!). So far, from the incredibly paltry amounts of info I've found, I've come to this consensus: it seems to be a very good school, because, according to wikipedia, a bunch of Canadian business execs went there, however, among B-schools outside the US, it is ranked as a second tier school. Because of the fact the McGill doesn't seem to give a crap about it's management school, I think Queen's commerce is by far the best in Canada (and also what I'm leaning towards).

@Adam Kalle

Queen's Commerce is definitely an impressive program. I was going to apply, but found out I didn't meet their admissions requirements. (They require British Columbian applicants to take an upper level humanities course. Since I thought I was going to be studying science earlier this year, I don't meet that requirement.)

Anyways, the list of recruiters at McGill is very impressive. Check out

Who recruits at McGill Management

All the big investment banks, and consulting and accounting firms seem to recruit there. The other schools I'm applying (Sauder at UBC, Schulich at York) do not seem to attract the calibre, prestige, and scope of the companies that recruit at McGill.

Anyways, I'll let you know if I find anything else.

McGill still holds the most prestige with companies in the US.

Wow that's a pretty good list

Yes, that is impressive, but could someone tell me if this is a list for recruiters of the graduate school, or the undergraduate school?

The list is for the undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce program. Pretty impressive, indeed. I think the only other Canadian schools that attract big American firms are Ivey at Western Ontario and Queen's.
