I'd really like to learn French without having to major in it, and I sort of want (badly) to get out of the northeast. If I don't get into Stanford, what are thoughts on McGill University of Montreal? What are some American universities to which its quality is comparable?

Have you visited the McGill site? There are numerous posts regarding pros and cons of the university; there are many students like you who are intrigued by experiencing a different culture. It's an exciting place which will test you in many ways an American school would not.

What do you mean the McGill site?

I assume the McGill website...

McGill University

Great school, really well-respected throughout the world. Montreal is an awesome city too.

It's great, but not right for everyone. Just know that the Canadian college experience is a bit different from the American college experience. You won't be getting the same college feel as your friends here in the states.

I think that Boysofwinter meant the McGill forum on College Confidential. Here's the link
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/mcgill-university/

Its called McGill, not McGill university "of Montreal".

Ide say it is most often compared with schools like UMICH, or UCLA, but not the same social scene.

Great school! Just got back from visiting on wednesday

UCLA's excellent . . . .

You won't learn French just by going to McGill...I think my French may have gotten worse actually since I don't take the course...
Montreal is pretty much just excellent..amazing. McGill's OK too I guess...it'll do.

Montreal is a great city to be in, and I'm sure you'll improve on your French if you're committed to doing that. If you're not though, you can get by with English just fine.

Undergraduate academic strengths are comparable to those of UMichigan, Rochester, etc. Socially, it's similar to a state school in the US, just located in a vibrant city.
