Anyone in or have heard a lot of Northwestern's MENU Program? I want a rigorous math education and it seems good, but I haven't heard much first-hand experience. Anything helps! Thanks.

MENU is excellent - well worth it IF you’re interested and they offer it to you.

Oh, it’s rigorous, all right. There are math majors who find it really difficult. And there are math majors that don’t even take it.

My son’s an Econ major and is in MENU program. He says it’s really challenging but well worth it. He also loved the professor he had whom I believe is the head of MENU program. Also, his freshman adviser told him that if he can manage to get straight B’s there, then he won’t have much problem going into other programs later on such as Kellogg Certificate.

wellwellwell - Is your son double majoring in math also? What does he want to after undergrad school? He sounds like me - ideally I want to double major in math and finance (or if i go to northwestern, Econ and the Kellogg finance certificate).

Have you taken a look at MMSS?

Yeah, at first glance I thought MMSS was a less-intense version of MENU, but now MMSS seems pretty impressive too…

@KidCudi, he is intending to do either econ and math double or econ major with math minor. But that may always change since he’s only a freshman. Also, like you mentioned above, he told me MMSS does not require or have as intensive math courses but it still is a good program to get into…

MENU is a more abstract mathematics curriculum whereas MMSS supposedly has a more example-based approach but I’ve found MMSS to be plenty theoretical alongside its example based approach.

MMSS also particularly relevant if you’re looking at a career in finance as the program has a very tight and approachable alumni base in finance and consulting, along with specific recruiting solely for MMSS students.

Another option is to be in MMSS and replace the MMSS first year math curriculum with the MENU math sequence. This requires special permission but that permission is almost always granted, especially to MMSS students who go asking for it. One student in my year chose to follow that curriculum, and he’s doing great with that choice.
