Im a rising junior and I’d like yalls thoughts on the classes I chose for next year. Any feedback about the rigor of the classes, content, AP exams, average grade, etc. Also any advice you’d give to someone who is about to take the course. Thanks!
Classes:
- AP Calculus AB
- AP English 3
- AP Government/AP Macroeconomics (both 1 semester classes)
- AP Physics 2
- AP Research
- AP Biology
- AP Psychology/Tennis (both 1 semester classes)
Thanks!
You’re going to have a pretty challenging year, I’m not going to lie to you lol. 8 APs is a lot. However, if you succeed you’ll set yourself up for great success next year. AP Calc BC, AP Physics, C, etc.
Have you taken any APs before? If so, which classes?
Sounds a bit like my schedule junior year. First of all, AP Research isn’t an actual AP class, right? I’m assuming that’s a class you do a research project in. Depending on how hard you work at your project, that’ll suck the vast majority of your time. If you’re in the US, chances are you’ll have like a test every other day with that amount of AP classes.
In short, with a schedule like that and a variety of ECs, I had literally no free time junior year. Weekends, evenings… they were all full. I didn’t have time to go to the BMV and get my driver’s permit until the last day of Spring Break! I honestly barely remember anything from junior year, it was a blur.
But if you really go for it and do your best (your real best, not the cheesy “do your best”), it’ll pay off big time. I don’t know your school, but chances are junior year is gonna be a bit of a living hell for you. But as far as rigor goes, if you pull it off, it’ll definitely bump not only your college resume (which, let’s be honest, is a bit overrated) but your head start going into college.
@Stanccepted I’m pretty sure OP is referring to one of the two AP Research Seminar/Capstone classes, which are legit, albeit uncommon APs.
1-3 and 7 aren’t too bad. I don’t know anything about ap research but sounds like it would be time consuming. Good luck with 4 and 6
AP Research is part of the new AP Capstone program.
Also the past/current ap classes I’ve taken:
Human Geography
Statistics
Physics
World History
Seminar
Your schedule is not doable. NO college expects that from you - even Top 10 colleges only expect 8 APs total. After that, the law of diminishing returns applies. So far, you’ve had two AP lite + 2 solid APs. So, 4. You’re doubling the number AND tripling the rigor. Keep in mind that for top colleges, your junior year is when you start getting leadership roles in your chosen ECs, making an impact, planning longer-term projects (depending on your ECs) - it’ll be more time consuming and ultimately at top colleges, ECs can make the difference.
Leadership, impact, + 8 APs: it’s just not feasible. So don’t do that to yourself.
- AP Calculus AB
- AP English 3
- AP Government/AP Macroeconomics (both 1 semester classes)
- AP Physics 2
- 1 foreign language (expected to level4 or AP for top colleges)
- AP Research if it’s not too time-consuming, but I would imagine that it is - ask your GC, if you’re overwhelmed with your schedule, can you drop AP Research and what would you take in its place?
- ?/ tennis
(Note that some colleges like to see some art class, and it’s required for UCs/CSUs).
Save AP Psych for an easy AP senior year - you’ll need one- as well as AP Bio.
