Hi guys! I am recently admitted to NYU. Previously I thought NYU is not known for its math department, but now I found out that Courant institute has a very high rank.
I really love mathematics and may want to pursue graduate degree in pure math. Can the resources at NYU support me to achieve that goal?
I know that NYU is more career oriented, but does it have fairly good resources for research or grad schools?
I am also curious to know can I find a similar group of people who also want to go to grad shcools for math instead of for econ or finance?
With apologies in advance for the cranky tone: have you done any research into Courant? have you even looked at the website? You say you want to do a graduate degree- which is a RESEARCH degree! so do your research. For example, in less time than it took you to make your post you could have found this page:
The undergraduate division of the Department of Mathematics, in both the College of Arts and Science and the Tandon School of Engineering, offers a wide variety of courses in pure and applied mathematics. Most of the faculty is associated with the university’s Courant Institute ofMathematical Sciences, one of the leading mathematical institutes worldwide, with a unique tradition of associating pure and applied mathematics.
You effectively hit the jackpot by accident, as Courant is world-class in mathematics. First of all, you have a great chance to get your graduate degree at Courant itself and work with fantastic professors. Second, if you decide to elsewhere, you will likely be able to get recommendations from widely recognized math professors at Courant itself.
My son applied to NYU. Even before applying, he met with one of the professors at Courant who gave him a warm reception, discussed research opportunities he could do as an undergrad, and introduced him to others in the department. Even though he decided to attend college elsewhere, he felt good about his admittance to NYU Courant.
