thoughts on private schools in Boston area?

Agree with AlexMac, re: Sage–It’s been a stunning, transformative experience for my nephew, who decamped from Wellesley public schools. FWIW, he’s just an average ferociously smart kid–his WISC score was 140, which does not place him in the “profoundly gifted” camp–so I guess it was a good fit for his brand of “mediocre giftedness.” In any event, the place is quirky, low key, and definitely NOT about appearances. Really, Sage is all about the work, not at all about the show.

There are good schools all over. What does your commute look like? The school is a social community and even if your kids have a bus option, you will want to be there at least once a week for conferences, sports, plays, speeches, or to bring in a forgotten backpack. Plus you will be driving around for playdates.

Are there, Bostdad2? That’s quite the confident declaration…

^ it seems to me there should be some good possibilities from the list in #22 .

That’s a list of secondary schools admitting kids from Sage, which is K-8. And, yes, some good schools on that list.

Zoe,

I live in Deerfield, MA (about 100 miles from you) but the Deerfield Academy here offers a 50% tuition discount to in-town students. That’s in addition to need-based aid. Some parents relocate just to take advantage of this wonderful benefit. For some reason, the Academy does NOT put this on its website!

I go to Fay! So if any of you have any questions PM me or ask me here on this thread!

What do you like the most and the least about Fay? How are the teachers? Are the academics rigorous? How are sports?

My favorite part about Fay is the community. We are really close and make really meaningful connections. But, my least favorite part about Fay is that I do not believe we are progressive or modern enough in our teachings, although the academics are very intense and rigorous, I think we could be more open to different styles of teaching. Out sports are not bad, but are not as great as when I first started at Fay. Our wrestling team is pretty substantial… One of our wrestlers is the New England champion! Our football team is not bad, and our lacrosse girls program is intense. We also have awesome runners for track. The teachers at Fay are actually really helpful and understanding, there are tons of opportunities for Extra Help! It’s always fun to talk with them in the dorms, and on weekend activity trips! If I missed anything please tell me! Keep coming with Qs :)

Schoolsgalore, how competitive is the tennis at Fay? Or the alpine ski? Also, you mention teaching style is not progressive, could you elaborate on this and/or give me an example? Not quite sure what you mean. Teaching style is extremely important if we decide to apply (it would be to 8th grade). Thanks!

I found this link really helpful when applying, and since I didn’t know many of the schools when I joined CC, this helped then too. I would look at it just for stats when you look at where to apply.

Winsor! It’s grades 5-12, though. I’m going there next year, and am absolutely thrilled!

any advice to increase chances for Roxbury latin, any advice during interview process?
