Thoughts on smoking

First off, I am 17 years old.

I've been smoking on and off just for the hell of it, (Just to see if it would relax me) but lately I've been smoking to a point where I buy my own packs and it is constant (Have not finished a whole pack though)...I have mixed emotions about smoking because sometimes I feel that I need it for the fact that it relaxes me, however, other times I look at myself and ask myself, "What the hell am I thinking?" Let's just say I'm sticking to smoking.

I look at people who smoke and sometimes don't take them seriously, but then again, what about me?

I've also smoked marijuana on and off and occasionally do it when I feel upset and stress, so to speak.

I want to know what you guys think about it, and for those of you who are girls, what would you think about meeting a guy who smokes at my age?

I guess that's similar to masturbation. Sometimes you feel guilty for doing it, but it's difficult to control it.

You're addicted. It's simple as that.
If you really want to get off it, there are ways.

I don't really care if guys smoke, but if a chick does, it's a deal breaker; I don't care how hot she is. I smoke a few cigars per year, but I'm a bit repulsed by anyone that smokes everyday.

Well, I think I'm pretty fit to answer this question. I've never smoked in my life and I don't ever plan to, but my boyfriend used to smoke marijuana quite regularly. He's quit, though, not just because I've asked him not to smoke but also because of the numerous ailments that come with it. Memory loss, cancer, lowered sexual potency - they're all very real. I don't judge him for his past. He has slipped up on one or two occasions, and I try to be understanding, but it may be hard for a girl to understand why you would smoke marijuana. I definitely think there are better ways to relax and that smoking marijuana, but I don't judge the people that do so morally because it's a personal choice.

Smoking cigarettes is no different; it just uses nicotine as the active drug. It has just as many risks involved and it is just as unappealing. It's a personal choice, but you need to quit for yourself and not for others. It's terrible for your health, especially being so young. Use whatever nicotine supplements or support from friends/family that you need, because there's no doubt it's going to be difficult to curb the addiction.

Considering I have asthma that tends to flare at the smallest presence of smoke - I can't say I'm in favor of it.

When I was in Beijing - which seemed to be the smoking capital of the world - I was having asthma attacks left and right.

Other than my own health issues, I don't care what someone else chooses to do to their body - but people who do smoke (even if I wasn't weezing like a dork), I don't care to be around.

I don't understand why the majority of smokers I've been around (not to say all, just the few I've been in contact with) always spit and hack loogies 24/7.

Whatever's in the cigarette induces saliva secretion. When I smoke a cigar, I'm spitting like crazy.

im 17 and a girl and i smoke (cigarettes/weed) and am trying to kick the habit all together.

i came down to two conclusions:
1)whatever i choose, i will have to live out the consequences the
rest of my life.
2) this one was sort of an epiphany for me, all the bad things in the world seem to be advertised to my age group (drugs/smoking/alcohol/promiscuity). my smoking is yielding power to "the man".

say "no" to the man with me ben!

If you want to smoke; do it. If not; don't. Easy. But don't smoke indoors as other people may not want to smell smoke. Smoking is just like anything else.

I am allergic to cigarette smoke too. I start to sneeze, my eyes get watery, and blah blah. You get the picture. So I generally try to stay away from those who are smoking around me.
Russel7, however, what is wrong with a girl smoking? Why the double standard?

Be careful if you go down the path of "ill just smoke for a few years then quit." I know people who said that at 14, then at 19, they are still puffing away, having tried to quit many times already. The earlier you stop the better.
I'm not crazy though, I'll agree that the occasional cigarette can be enjoyable, but have them like you would alcohol - in social situations etc. If you need a rig just to get up in the morning, Uh oh.

Yeah, I should've worded that better. I don't like when women smoke because it's a big turn off. And since I'm not attracted to guys, I don't really care if they smoke. But if a woman smoked that I wouldn't be attracted to regardless, i wouldn't care. She's in the same category as the men. Kind of like how I can be friends with a chick that I'm not attracted to (just like I can be with guys), but I can't be friends with an attractive woman. At least not friends in the classical sense, since I'd always have ulterior motives.

im pretty sure my screen name says it all. never liked cigarettes much, generally at the top schools there arent many cigarette smokers because the student body is well, smarter.

drug use is a different story. but marijuana is hardly a drug anyway, whoever said "memory loss, lowered sexual potency, and cancer" is a consequence of marijuana is missing the facts. there has never been an instance of lung cancer as a direct result of marijauana, but there is possibility for lung damage. short term memory problems (not "memory loss" as if parts of your memory get wiped away) is a temporary consequence that is relieved within a day or two of toking. and by "lowered sexual potency" the only possibly things you could be referring to are lowered sperm count which marijuana does do temporarily (a lot of things lower your sperm count, and who cares anyway there's millions of em) or a lowered sex drive (getting a bad grade on an exam also reduces my sex drive... bums me out)

but yes marijuana does have addictive properties and its probably not wise to spend your days smoking when u have stuff to do. in moderation i see no problem with it. and for the OP, if you smoke weed to "relieve stress" or when youre "upset" then this is not a good sign. it should be a social or meditative/philosophical experience, not a means of escaping reality when you have problems. this is a self-destructive habit and you should probably avoid doing so

How is weed barely a drug? I've tried it and it definitely had pretty strong physical and cognitive effects.

I say, if you want to harm yourself go right ahead. Sit alone in your room and smoke...

but don't dare smoke around other people. It should be against the law to smoke in public...seriously.

i don't really see any reason to smoke cigarettes. i've smoked them before and aside from the very short head rush they don't do anything for me. that said, i don't judge people because they smoke.

as for weed, when at school i smoke pretty much dialy. i'm not going to say it's smart or anything, but for me it doesn't affect me in any real negative way. i'm also not going to say it isn't a drug, but for people to put it in the same group as coke or meth is beyond me. after smoking daily for almost a year, i took a 3 week break cold turkey. didn't need to smoke, the only thing that changed was my sleeping patterns(times shifted and i slept a little less).

Smoking cigarettes = big no no
Smoke pot, I wouldn't really care, just as long as it a) doesn't consume your life and b) isn't smoked EVERY day.

Don't smoke, not even inside your room away from society. Smokers drive up health care costs due to their constant need for medical attention and lower productivity in the workplace due to their "smoke breaks".

I don't like smoking at all. Not just because smoking=asthma=wheezing like a ridiculous mofo, but because it costs money. Cigarettes are hella expensive. They have no health benefits. They smell nasty. They might calm you down a little but overall are gross and extremely unattractive to me (for both men and women). I could care less what people do to their own bodies, but I definitely try to avoid people who smoke on a frequent basis. As for pot, I'm a little more muddled on that. I don't like it, but I don't see the terrible harm in trying it once or a couple of times either as it is not genuinely addicting and definitely not comparable to coke/meth etc.
