Hello,
My son has been accepted and has narrowed his choice of colleges between Purdue, Univesity of Maryland and Rutgers school of engineering. We just returned from UM and he was interested in Aerospace progam. We are from NJ so the cost at Rutgers would be lower. I am looking for any and all opinoins based on these 3 choices, pros and cons. We may be making a trip to Indiana in the next few weeks to see Purdue. We have seen UM and Rutgers. Thank you in advance with any and all opinions.

If cost is a big issue for you, then definitely go with Rutgers. But if you can afford the OOS I would have to say choose between Purdue and UMD. I know Purdue has one of the best overall engineering programs in the country, and UMD is not far behind. But thats just me

Thanks Wilkey! Anyone else have any thoughts?

Purdue seems to be the best of the three. But I agree with Wikey, if cost matters, go to Rutgers.

Thanks Kilojoule!

Okay, I’m going to throw in a vote for Rutgers which has nothing to do with cost. My son is a senior mechanical/aerospace major there now. He transferred from the University of Delaware after sophomore year because they were offering aerospace courses only in the book but not on the schedule. His opportunities have been wonderful at Rutgers. He is a Slade scholar doing NASA funded research. And he received a job offer back in September, which he accepted. I’m sure you could find similar experiences at the other 2 universities, but they exist at Rutgers, too. In any case, your son should choose the place he likes best and can afford. If he has to take large personal loans, I would choose what is most affordable. That may or may not be Rutgers depending upon scholarships offered.

Thanks Mattmoosemom,
Thank you for your reply. How is the recruiting at Rutgers? Is the recruiting on par with the other schools, UM and Purdue? Based on your sons experience did he find that classmates received similar offers?
Thanks again!

For cost?..Rutgers

Besides, if you are into rankings, U-Maryland has a Top-10 AeroE graduate program so that can be done at grad school. Still, you cannot go wrong with Rutgers…VERY WELL respected school.

I’d say go with Purdue like the others. Choose Rutgers depending on how much financial aid is offered. Paying 100k more for Purdue isn’t worth it, to be honest. Rutgers has a phenomenal Engineering program, it’s just that Purdue is overall more prestigious and stronger.

My son said that other students are getting offers, but not everyone. I do believe the economy is still making it hard.
