Harvey Mudd is an excellent, intense school. But when our son was accepted in 2010, the max merit scholarship was $10K.
Note: At most schools you cannot “stack” merit scholarship and need-based aid. If your research finds some schools that do, they could help keep the cost down during the years of multiple kids in college.
However, some colleges do apply merit scholarships first against student loan and student work expectations, before reducing FA grants. Check the college web pages or ask directly.
Cal Poly cost: OOS at Cal Poly is 43k and will be increasing 2k+ per year for the next few years, stopping around 48-49. Someone please correct me if I misunderstand.

The Cal Poly Opportunity Fee will be assessed beginning in fall 2019, when incoming out-of-state students will pay an additional $2,010 a year. Those students will pay the same annual fee during their undergraduate tenure at Cal Poly. Each subsequent incoming class of out-of-state students will pay an increased amount through 2022.
Nevermind, I think I figured it out - thank you for the quote. (I had assumed that all OOS students pay the same fee and it is increasing each year. But, it sounds like only the new freshman class pays the new, higher Opportunity Fee and the fee remains the same for that class throughout their four years. We have a kid who would be applying to start fall 2021, so 47k.)
@evergree5: The regular cost of attendance beyond the opportunity fee could also increase so overall costs will increase. My younger son went to SDSU and during his 4 years there, the statewide CSU tuition did increase once along with housing.
So if your son applies for Fall 2021, he would pay 2 years of the opportunity fee.
The current OOS COA is just under $43k. That includes the opportunity fee. The opportunity fee is set during the student’s first year and does not change. The first class is $2000ish every year for all 4 years. It will then increase $2000 for each subsequent class until the fourth year after it was introduced. From that year forward all OOS students will pay roughly $8000/year in opportunity fees.
Remember those estimates are based on living and eating on campus all 4 years. Most students save significant money by moving off campus after the first year.
@eyemgh: Thank you for the clarification so this is a permanent fee that will not be phased out in 2022? The information on the website does not spell it out well.
@evergreen5, that is correct. They are trying to build a fund pool to help bridge the gap in financial assistance to underserved populations. They get fully qualified students who then can’t attend because they don’t have access to aid. Fully phased in during the Fall of 2020 Cal Poly will still be a better deal from OOS than the UCs.
