Hi, I have posted a lot about colleges on this forum and I need thoughts on choosing the right one. I live in Tennessee and got accepted to UTK. My other choices are University of New Mexico, U of Kansas, Kansas State, FSU, and U of Minnesota. My net price at UNM is 15000 per year while Knoxville is around 20k per year. I likely do not qualify for financial aid. I am applying to as many scholarships as possible. Are any of the OOS schools I mentioned worth the cost? I really need some insight. My parents already have about 30k saved for college and the rest will be out on me. Is it possible to establish in-state in Kansas, Minnesota, and Florida? I plan to study political science and study Law. I really want to live in California because that has been my dream my whole life. I applied to all of these Flagship schools because I figured they would give me the best opportunity to move to California. Any help will be good?
What are your stats? GPA? Test Score(s)?
@my2caligirls I have a 3.17 unweighted GPA and like a 3.5 weighted GPA. My Act score is a 24 Superscored. I qualified for the amigo scholarship at UNM which gave me in state tuition but I don’t know if I want to attend there.
Not sure where you live in TN but with your budget it may be wise to attend a local college and commute. Unless you qualify for financial aid $30k savings will not get you through 4 years of college. CA schools will not be affordable. Do well in undergrad, get into a great law school, and then make your move to California for work.
@my2caligirls I live in West Tennessee and there aren’t really any local universities nearby. I have 2 years paid at U of New Mexico. I want to attend a flagship university because a law firm in California will want a degree from a recognized Out of state school.
Other TN options would include MTSU (actually more ugrads there than UTK); and UMemphis. Are you figuring in the TN Hope scholarship for UTK? MTSU would need your application in by Dec 1 to qualify for any add’l scholarships there- but they will take December ACT scores- and if you can raise your ACT to a 25 you might qualify for some additional $ there.
@oneundecided Yes, I already received a decision from Mtsu but does it really matter where you get your undergrad education? My dad went to MTSU and I don’t know if I will get an alumni scholarship. I qualify for the hope. I would rather attend UTK though because they have more student life and better opportunities.
