I also have interest in Cornell University, though when I heard it has the highest suicide rate... it really makes second thoughts. Workload, pressure, competition etc... must be awful.

I lust for Columbia University. Lol...

As a sophomore with less than two months left this school year, I am starting to look at colleges. Without boring you to death, here are my key stats:

2100 SAT (will retake)

PLAN projected 31-34 on ACT

Only one AP so far, but should have nine by graduation

Every Honors available taken (all English + History up to this point)

4.0 UW GPA, 4.1 weighted (Honors don't weight up here, only APs)

A decent # of clubs and volunteer hours

Strong record in competetive speech and debate

Huge interest in engineering and applied math/science

I am considering the following schools at the moment:

Purdue University
Carnegie Mellon University
University of Michigan
University of Washington
UC Berkeley
Rochester Institute of Technology
Harvey Mudd College
University of Minnesota
CalPoly
Colorado School of Mines
Oregon State University

I am definitely going to apply to these schools:

George Washington University (slight reach)
Boston University (match)
American University (match)
Virginia Commonwealth University (safety)

That leaves me too schools to apply to (I'm going to apply to six schools). One of them will be a reach but a full ride (UNC Chapel Hill is likely because of the Carolina Covenant program, maybe an Ivy or UVa) and the other will be another safety or a match school, not sure.

I'm a high school junior, and I'm already done with my college stuff. What procrastinators. :p
P.S. JK about the procrastinator thing. :)

possibly emory, vanderbilt, washU, unc-ch, u of michigan, purdue, and george washington.

i'm a sophmore and i'm interested in unc-ch, uva, william & mary, uga, bc, and vt.(:
but honestly, i don't really know for sure. anyone know how much legacy helps at unc-ch (out of state)?!

I am really interested in politics and loved DC when I visited but I'm not sure if my stats measure up to schools like AU, GW, and Georgetown. Where else should I be looking?

Stats:
GPA:3.6 weighted
SAT:2100, 730CR, 680MATH, 690WRITING
ACT: not taking it
I am taking challenging courses and I am at a very competitive school. I am have been in student government for the past two years; this year I am junior class vice president. I am on several varsity sports teams and have a part-time job. I am also involved in FBLA (I'm going to states next month!) and key club where I used to be an officer. In the past in high school I have been involved in a choir.

what do you think?

Hi! I was just browsing the net when I found this thread. I’m a Junior this year, and already I’m in heaps of College Research. Sometimes I think I worry too much, so if anyone have any suggestions feel free! I’ll accept them with my utmost gratitude.
Facts:
I’m going to be a first generation college ;D, since I moved to the America eight years ago. So far I’ve worked my butt off learning English and Spanish at the same time ( epic fail btw)
Current GPA: The guidance gave me a unweighted 3.6, but if it’s weighted it would become something like 3.8/3.9-ish ( So far I only took all honors and three A.P classes)
Ranking: Somewhere in the top 15-10% It’s still not clear because everything need to be weighted.
Activities:
Key Club Member-2006-Present
Key Club VP 2007-2008
Key Club President 2008-2009
Student Council 2007-2008

there’s more but I also can’t remember

Sat: I’m taking it on May, and highly likely a retake on fall

Here is a list of school I have compiled so far

Oberlin- I really like the notion of the Oberlin Activist spirit. It seems like the perfect college to someone like me who is interested in the political world.
Tufts- Also on the top of my list. I have done so much research for this school. I know I might not make it, but I’ll give it a shot.
Bucknell- Just a notion so far
Boston College- I fell in love with this school the first time I saw it on a poster. So far in my research I like this very much.
LaFayette- Undecided, but I probably wouldn’t make it.
UMass Amherst- My Safety School

Major: I’m debating between PoliSci or International Affair. I want to continue on a go to a Law School, but at the same time I want to work for the U.N.
This part is most crucial, since it’s going to decide what school I would end up in.

So, that’s all the information that I could provide as of currently. I’m terribly sorry that everything seem a little vague. So if anyone could help me, I would be more than happy. :D

Junior 2010

SAT 2220, going to retake in June. Taking subject tests in May
GPA 4.0UW, 4.8W, rank 5/524

ECs- president of one club, involved in a few others, as well as band and soccer
Volunteer/work- lots of tutoring, hopefully a research internship this summer

Colleges, definitely going to apply to these -
early action
NC State
UNC
Chicago
MIT
Caltech

regular action
Duke
Cornell
Carnegie Mellon

Probably going to apply to a few HYPS as well (just to try my luck). I’m 98.75% sure I can get into NCSU and UNC as my safeties, and if I get into even one other EA then that will definitely open up my options for RA as I know I’ll have something solid to fall back on. Of course if I don’t get into my safeties then I’ll consider some more down to earth schools for RA. First choice right now is Chicago, then Carnegie Mellon (though if I get into any one of HYPSMC with decent financial aid, hell I’m going).

Oh, and I’m leaning towards a double major in mathematics and business administration.

mvmanno-
Your stats are good, ec’s good, all good stuff. The only thing is I don’t see your passion for something shining through. It just seems like you joined a lot to look good, and I’m not trying to be mean in saying that whatsoever. You have a good chance at your schools you just need to let your passion take you there!

BTW. I love this thread. And all this time I though I was the only one! Lets keep up the posts guys:)
And also, I’m sick of people telling me not to worry about college yet. Anyone else? I mean I’m not stressing about it but people are telling me I’m too young as a sophomore to be looking at sites like these, but I find it very fun!

PS-Please chance meee! I’m placing my stats in another post

School list: Georgetown, Stanford, Amherst (legacy), brown, possibly harvard and Princeton
it doesn’t ever hurt to dream!
also, American, Vanderbilt, Kenyon, u of Madison, u of Chicago…I don’t have a concrete list.
Hopeful major is international relations or business, minor in Spanish most likely.
I apologize for the haphazardness of the post! it’s very messy. Sorry.

Please assess if I am on the right track for the schools I listed above and also WHAT I CAN DO TO IMPROVE! thank you thank you

@ non arctic

Your application looks nearly flawless to me. Just make sure your standardized tests scores are in the right ranges, and you should have a good shot at any school you apply to.

And your assessment was nearly perfect. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the things I’m involved in, but I can’t truly say that I am passionate about any one of them at this time. Advice?

mvmanno, WOW. haha your stats & e.cs are really impressive
&as for passion, I have to agree with non arctic on that…but isn’t there one thing you’re most passionate about?! (I know stupid question because you already said you can’t say that…), but honestly, I’m sure there’s something you feel the best about yourself when you’re doing or something. Whether it’s volunteering, world language/latin, or sports…there have to be reasons for why you do them or why you love them. If you had to show which one you are more passionate about, you should probably write about the one that you can talk most about with how you enjoy it and what you AND other people get out of it. Like for me, I’m kind of like you, because I have German awards and I LOVE German I’m actually going to still study some in college, possibly my minor. And I have a lot of community service and a TON of marching band experience. With all these I could write so much about it and all my experiences that show my passion for these activities. You just have to make it clear that you’re passionate about SOMETHING to the college during the admissions process. (…I mean seriously, who’s going to know which one you’re actually most passionate about? haha.) YEAH…um sorry this like didn’t help AT ALL! But good luck!!!

&duuudee I didn’t get any response to my post
But then again my gpa isn’t as close to like any of yours haha. ECs are good I suppose on mine, and SAT should be fine. ahhh, stressful pre-college life lol. But yeah, I’m not really applying to top-tier schools…people at my school have told me I should aim for higher schools becaus they believe I can get in. Not sure if that’s true? lol. My gpa is the one thing holding me back…not to mention it’s extremely important. Ugh, this year is killing me! haha Thanks for listening to me for anyone that’s reading this :]

I dont know too much about colleges, but I am interested in what colleges, based on my interests, I would enjoy. I am looking to make sure I am on the right path, but also to get college suggestions (good fits). Thanks so much. Looking at Yale, Georgetown, Columbia, maybe Deep Springs

Thanks for the advice. I do think that finishing the yearbook is going to be pretty special, actually being able to hold a 200-page book you practically put together yourself. I’m also really hoping that I can get an intern because that is something I could definitely really enjoy.

As for your stats, your GPA is def your weak point, but I think strong test scores and your great ECs can pull you into any of the schools on your list.

@fiz

I would say that you have the resume to get into any college in the nation.
