Thread for BS/MD BS/DO 2021-2022

Thanks, both rice and Vandy provide Merit scholarship. Rice is more generous. Compared to costs between regular ugs and bsmd , there is no big difference among them. Thus, cost wouldn’t be a big concern for decision.
My S has been struggling with selection of Harvard vs.BSMD. Since he had went through the whole process of bsmd preparation and application, he seems a bit frightened with redo it again if he chooses Harvard premed. The temptation from Harvard is too big for kids . Any suggestions for sharing?

When did she graduate?

It appears your kid’s medical ECs are weak but other ECs and academics are strong to get two Ivies and southern ivies. If you don’t want to share EVs publicly, feel free to PM me and I will give my 2 cents.

Thank you for replying. Please forgive my question, but I am really just trying to understand: ORM means Asian/Indian, URM means Black/Latino, correct? What category do White fall into then? I hope it is OK to ask…

Cost of living for Stonybrook will be a lot higher than for Upstate and Albany. Something to consider.

They are not considered a minority and probably have reasonably large enough group being admitted.

ORMs dominate the medical applicants (Ivy applicants too) and many medical schools try to limit the number of admits. URMs dont have enough applications but medical schools believe they need to to ensure a fair representation of the population.

First of all Congratulations to your S and the proud parents. His results are phenomenal. Ask him to take time to feel proud. It must have taken a lot of hard work and focus to build his profile.

I understand your S has concern of going thru the medical application process again but srk2017 is right that he probably didn’t get into many bsmd programs because his high school profile didn’t show commitment to medicine compared to other applicants.

Harvard is a great choice. He should go for it. Ask him to take it easy and relax and not overdo things (other students at Harvard want to over-achieve stuff) and not other students influence him. I would suggest taking just one major “biology” or “biochem” on the premed track and repeating AP courses (especially chemistry). Harvard provides great opportunities for medical ECs. Boston has top-notch hospitals. He should take up ECs that he will enjoy the most. ECs are a great way to make friends and socialize as well. Cambridge is a great place for students and he will definitely enjoy his college years

Now I understand. Thank you!

People who attend Harvard may change their mind about medicine. That is always a risk for parents who want their child to be a doctor…

They will be successful in whatever else they choose.

Which BSMD program are you expecting.

Experts can vote

If the intention of child is 100 % to go in medicine. Which BSMD from REMS/BU/Pitt/Case PPSP

in your or any expert’s mind are worth giving up Harvard ?

You (your S) has a good problem to work with.

If he’s firm on the path to be doctor and like Drexel then “go for it” (Drexel is good btw).

If he wants to explore and possibly shoot for “bigger fish” and cares about brand… then IVY

Don’t worry about getting 1 BSMD alone … (this may be due to other factors apart from your S credentials)… look at @texaspg post on race in response to @2018Summer2018 .

Sorry, I look everything with number

Example: If a college has 10 seats… they want it diverse … which means got to put in everyone… apart from that they try to fill in from every state too . In my observation this is what dooms many ORMs in particular ( Imagine you got to be 1 in OOS or 1 in many instate …particularly Tristate)

While in Traditional route… though they try to follow similar … now the seats are more and the colleges are more (so is competition) so it’s much different ball game.

BTW, lots of folks ask this question in DM … ( on why only 1 or what should i do) … we are all learning

Good luck.

Not an expert

I will take CASE , PITTS, REMS over Harvard in that order… BU toss.

Hi! I am debating between the following three schools for the regular pre-med track! Any advice/information would be very helpful. For some background, I am a New Jersey resident, am planning on applying to Med School and going into surgery post-grad, and applied as a Neuroscience major for all three.

Temple University:

  • Received a full-tuition scholarship so will have to pay 12-15k per year for housing/food
  • Honors
  • 45 minute drive

UPitt

  • Received 10k per year scholarship, so will have to pay around 37k
  • Honors
  • About 5 hour drive

University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

  • Will cost 54k per year
  • 7 hour drive
  • No honors

Hi I was wondering if there was anyone that is considering GW 7 year BA/MD. I am leaning towards it and wanted to connect with others that are thinking about it

case and pitt most likely >> harvard

^^ but all subjective/based on your own case

Anyone attended the UCF Med Scholar open house on 17th? Can you share your thoughts/info for those who missed. Appreciate it.

Not familiar with the pre-med programs at these schools. I suggest first find out more info about their pre-med programs and their acceptance rate, what schools their students went to. etc.
Best wishes.

Hmmm, Dr.Grundy wasn’t helpful? My son didn’t rely too much on her but she was available whenever he had questions. Pretty much I was the premed advisor for my son. Besides ECs, LORs make big difference. Last year four got into UPenn (3 from class of 2021 and 1 from 2020)
