I will vote for Pitt but UG experience May be underwhelming. Again, all you care about is medical degree then all those medical schools are good but Pitt is T20 medical school.
Thinks of networking opportunities and friendships as a Harvard graduate.
UPitt Honors is really good. if you can afford 37K for 4 years, this is the best option for you for better-med schools, etc. UPitt has good research and honors students can complete Bachelor in Philosophy degree (BS version of Ph.D.) in addition to your bio major/pre-med track.
If money could be an issue, Temple with 60K over 4 years is decent too!
I suggest Pitt or Case depending on where your kid is comfortable (public, private) and location /fit. Those are great med schools and you are betting on med education over UG (which also is solid)
Harvard is good and preps students well to be successful as leaders and have potentially great careers. There is no guarantee that they will get into a med school of the Pitt or Case caliber though!
How about BU>>PLME?
Are 8 years at PLME worth the tuition and extra year compared to BU 7 years? Cost might be just a little more at PLME but saving one year, will help start career faster.
PLME has the Ivy tag but ranking wise, BU is better. Also, now since a newer trend of taking a year off to do research after M3 for cream residency, increases number of total years.
Thatās a tough one, but never look at one year savings. Doing four year gives them more time to relax and enjoy UG experience. Again, things like research done in UG are helpful in medical school and residency. I am seeing 7 year students taking gap in year in medical school to beef up research for competitive fields. If your kid is only interested in primary care then no need to worry about 7 vs 8 yes. All I heard is Brown gives wonderful UG experience and BU is an urban disjointed campus. BU medical I think slightly rammed higher than Brown but rankings you need to see in tiers and I check as T10, T20 , T50 and rest.
Iād advise against Pitt given their unrealistic requirements. A 3.8 GPA is not easy to maintain, and Iāve heard that many students fall out of the program.
Iād honestly take REMS over Harvard and any of the other options. No MCAT + low GPA requirement + ability to take essentially whatever courses youād like to is awesome, and URoch has a great med school.
There is a kid who was in the batch of 2013 who got into Yale and Stanford and HPME. I personally met with him in Houston because he came to interview for a Baylor combined program. He had 3 pages of questions for me on why my D chose Stanford over Caltech/UCSD and why I think he should attend Yale or Stanford vs HPME. It was kind of funny that I met this kid because his parent was talking to me on CC and requested this meeting and he was conducting an interview!
He chose HPME saying that he was not sure he would get into another T20 med school and on average he had the best option available being from Florida and Florida not having any highly ranked med schools as a fallback after attending an elite school for undergrad.
I think he made the wrong decision but he was very thorough and thoughtful in his decision making and I have no way to fault a kid who was that prepared. He finished medicine, doing residency now so he made it.
It is important for your kids to have that kind of thought process in evaluating their own choices.
Itās a T40 medical school. Thereās certainly no guarantee that OP will get into a T40 med school from Harvard without taking gap years for research/clinical experience.
Have you ever been to Rochester? Itās a fine city with lots to do. Also beautiful scenery/nature in the surrounding areas if youāre into hiking and outdoorsy stuff.
OP has some great options, undoubtedly. They canāt go wrong, but Iād be wary of choosing Pitt (which, by the way, is very comparable to Rochester with the exception of major sports teams).
The kidās thought process is needed for deciding between a lottery school and BS/MD. Parents are always a problem in my opinion in these decisions but to each their own.
I dont mean it in a derogatory way. Lot of the ORM parents have risked a lot to move to US, settle here, raise their kids. However, they are not willing to let their kids take the least bit of risk. It is very hard for us not to tell our kids not to do something and allowing them to take a risk to bet on their own future.
Itās a great med school, but also long, unpredictable winter snow from November to April. Something to consider for 8 years. Visited campus last week, and it was still snowing.
