Thread for BSMD 2020-2021 Applicants (Part 1)

it is sarcastic.

Higher Education is a big profitable business in India, IMO.

does anyone know when stevens will start offering supplements or interviews? (whichever is the next step in their process)

Stevens deadline was Nov 15 - i.e. 3 days ago.
It probably will take them 2-6 weeks to send out interview invites.

Is my BSMD application competive? I applied for Brown PLME, Boston bsmd, and rochester rems and no regular undergraduate institutions. Will apply to india medical for backup and am looking at carribean options.

ORM-Indian male

My SAT is 1460 (97th percentile) and my GPA as 3.57 (rank of 78 out of about 350). Act is 29 (didn’t submit)

EC’s: No clubs, star scout in boy scouts, recently started playing soccer. 20 hours shadowing nurse and 10 hours shadowing dentist and PA each.

For the indian medical schools, I am currently looking at the one in manipal and some in mumbai. I am also looking at the 7 year medical program at the carribean school St. George’s University.

Please provide me some advice on my applications

You honestly don’t have any chances at getting in those programs. Your only options seem to be india or carribean at this point.

Do what is best in your situation.

don’t feed the trll

I am not a U.S. citizen or green card holder. My parents are on H1. For this reason all the schools I apply to consider me as an international student and charge extremely high rates of tuition. This is why I didnt apply to a few regular UG institutions.

@Sooar78

If you have eye catching ECs or have published papers then may there is light at end tunnel else you should apply for undergrad as backup as nothing is assured as I assume you are ORM like us

REMS BU and brown are top 3 programs and should have considered lower tiers like Upitt but again I heard few years back even Upitt had 5 out 10 students with perfect SAT (Not ACT) and two of them left Harvard and Yale to join that program so be prepared for reality

Is paying off a loan for 3-4 crores with India doctor earnings feasible after paying for mbbs in India if I am unable to make it back to the states?

Does anyone know about the BS/MD program at St. georges university (carribean)?

Hi, Does anyone know when Union/AMC will start offering supplements or interviews? (whichever is the next step in their process)
Thanks in advance

Pitt is a topmost tier medical school.

Please do not say Pitt is a low tier school.

@Sooar78 You have few things to consider. BS/MD programs requires high school done is in US. Based on your status it is not clear how many high school years you did in US.
Based on your status you should take more conservative approach. Take the route in US that will earn you money once you finish undergraduate, i.e. don’t take liberal arts route as those degrees won’t get you good paying jobs, let alone H1 need, rather take engineering route.
That will buy you 4 more years in US and hopefully by that time you have green card (you are running against 21 years age clock and mayn’t be able to get GC based on your parents status if you crossed 21) and you also performed well in UG that makes you med school eligible.
No matter what route you take, each has its pros and cons and life is not always fair. You have to understand the risk undertaking in any approach and should have appetite for that risk.
Personally, if Dr is sole ambition, MBBS route in India is much safer than Caribbean route as India will house you if things fall apart in US.

How are you going to pay for Brown PLME, or Boston bsmd, or Rochester rems ? With your stats and international student status, any financial aid may not be available. Your parents may have to be full-pay at these institutions.
If so, why can not they pay for an Indian MBBS?. Something does not add up here.

You need to do some research about NEET and India’s MMBS programs.
Have you given NEET? The current year admissions process is in progress and first round of lists have already come out.
Are you targeting NRI quota or resident quota?
Which state in India will your residency match to?

For give you a perspective, DY Patil Medical College (a low tier private college) in Navi Mumbai, for local resident, the fees are about Rs 25 lacs per year. This translates to about 1 to 1.25 crores for your medical education (not factoring hostel fees).

For NRI quota, the fees range from $45K to $60K/ year - this translates to about 2 to 2.5 crores for your medical education.

A GP (equivalent to a PCP here) can earn about Rs 20 - 40 lacs per year depending on the location, type of practice and other factors. Specialists can earn double or triple that amount.

Now do the math on how much loan you can service with that income.

Sorry Typo - India’s MBBS programs.
