Is the “optional” essay on the form to still be considered for RD admissions really “optional.” Kind of ridiculous to make us write another essay. Is it bad to not do it?

Just wondering who are the super kids who get accepted to such programs? I thought we could not have done anything more than what we did in the four years of high school! It was well beyond a high achiever student!!
My son was selected for Case Western interview. After REMS rejection, he is very happy with this.

Yes, IMO, they could have thrown a dart at 2900 applicants and selected many times over.
