Thanks @confident2021. Is there a restriction that you can only apply to one speciality? If one applies to very competitive one - such as dermatology (and I saw somewhere that it has only 34 spots nationwide) - what happens if you don’t match? Why can’t you add a second speciality if you apply to such competitive speciality?
Your answer to rk1235rk’s second question is false.
You may interview and rank residency programs in multiple specialties. You will need to prepare separate applications though (personal statement, recommendation letters, etc.)

This. Many students apply to multiple specialties. There is no rule saying you only apply to one, although it is what most people do.
Any one received FAU interviews today?
Congratulations! When is the interview?
My D received the same from Stevens after the interview…
That’s wrong. You can apply to multiple specialties except those that have their own match.
@mg121779 and @lojo23 when you login to upitt GAP medical portal it says on right side on bottom this:
Applicants who are invited for interview will be informed by February 15.
Interviews will be scheduled for the 2nd-3rd week of March.
Admitted applicants will be informed by April 15.
Academic medicine does not pay well and one can get MD/PhD from most medical schools, not only from T20. A PhD is a PhD regardless of the institution. The research funding is mostly via NIH and available to a wide spectrum of medical schools, not only to T20 medical schools. It is the prestige factor which attracts a lot of folks to T20 medical schools.
Some may apply to a Combined Residencies - e.g. 1 year internal medicine and then transfer to another field like opthamalogy.
Please check https://www.nrmp.org/ for residency matching process info.
The ranking is done by a medical student (amongst all programs s/he interviewed) and residency program directors (of all interviewed candidates) in a particular specialty. It is a complicated ranking algorithm. Most medical students do not match to first choice residency program.
that’s not choice, some of them need one transitional year.
they guys who invented match algorithm got Nobel prize so don’t try to understand it
It is a computer algorithm like any other. It may be difficult for folks with a little computer science/mathematics knowledge to follow, IMO.
Not sure who was asking about VCU a few days ago, but you can in fact apply out of the program. Was at a parent info session last week and they were very detailed. Said that 25% of the people apply out and go elsewhere and they do not mind.
Understand your eagerness. But it is too early to worry about residencies. Things will evolve and majority of students will firm up only during 3rd year MD, which is another 6+ years. Doing the specific courses during the MD 1-2 years and later rotations will give different thoughts and reality check. Always outliers.
Dr. Gregory Pence from UAB called and told S got into UAB EMSAP !!
Congratulations!! Are you in state?
