Thread for BSMD 2020-2021 Applicants (Part 2)

The ivy network is not important in medicine unless you want to pursue finance/business/consulting as a doctor.

Jefferson is a good medical school only issue I see is that undergrad is far from med school.

Cost wise, Penn State wins because of lower UG tuition per year. Med school tuition for both schools almost similar. Penn state is also a 7 year program, so I’d take it.

thanks RR3600 …

@ATX1826 I think PMM is the clear choice here
Better undergrad and undergraduate experience, better medical school (in a MUCH more desirable location) and save a year which probably offsets some of the scholarship offered by AMC. Can always do MBA in med school if desired.

SKMC seems like a better medical school than AMC, and Penn State is a massive state school while Union is a small liberal arts college. Also depends on how important the MBA is to you, as well as other factors. I would personally choose PMM, but you should visit in person to compare!

Thanks! Good idea about visiting in person. Just got our first vaccines a week ago, and we are planning to visit in couple of weeks to get a better idea about the place …

I had a surgery as well. My surgeon was referred by my PCP and the specialist I consulted. This surgeon according to them was top notch. He went to public university for UG, MD and residency however went to T5 for his fellowship and is a professor at t5.

Thanks! Is there any hospital affiliated to penn state in the same town/city for the kids to get some exposure on clinical volunteering or research ? OR the college being remote, is the concern related to available research and shadowing opportunities?

We visited Union and AMC for our older DD. Union campus is really small and we did not find the location ideal for medical related opportunities. PSU is also in a rural area but it is a LARGE campus. I’m not sure about medical opportunities near there all the same.

Penn Sate has its own medical school.

Trading requires skills other than pre-med courses.

oh… nice. that will be helpful and alleviate some of the ‘opportunity’ concerns

yes residency and fellowship matters.

Not to say you cannot make to top programs from any medical school but there is a extra effort you need without brand name

@ATX1826 - Penn/Jeff PMM program is better. Both PSU UG & Jeff med are better in terms of education/prestige and more cost effective as well.

Union Total cost of attendance turns out to be approx. 75K. Penn state cost is approx. 50K. So, even with the scholarship for Union, the cost should be the same as Penn state. I noticed that AMC cost was also a little more than Jeff however you should check. Total Penn/Jeff cost is less compared to Union/AMC.

I trust my kid more than GME management from a investment perspective.

Penn State medical school is in Hershey, not close to PSU campus.

There is a big difference between trading and premed.

Thanks Vicky2019.

@magicstick5 - I wrote in this before - search above. Summary is RPI-AMC applicants for residency are generally a different breed as compared to the traditional AMC student applicant. Because of the RPI-AMC requirements to matriculate to AMC (e.g. bench research), they are very competitive applicants for residency, even competitive specialties if that’s what they choose to pursue. Thus, I would say they RPI-AMC is a respected and legitimate BS/MD program. My wife did the RPI-AMC program and is an ophthalmologist. Amongst her several friends in the program, it included matches in another ophthalmology, urology, IM (then gastroenterology).
