Thread for BSMD Applicants 2019

@gtrd2010… we applied to Rutgers in New Brunswick… but it is not a feeder school, could you do undergrad at Rutgers New Brunswick and go to NJMS??? My S got admitted to both Rutgers Newark and Rutgers New Brunswick, which is in a very nice area…??

@sajju786 Rutgers-NB is NOT a feeder school for NJMS. Rutgers-NB has it own RWJMS and its own program, You can easily move between Rutgers-NB and Rutgers-Newark. Rutgers-NB is much better campus. You can take classes in each other’s campus - Rutgers-NB and Rutgers-Newark.

@grtd2010 Thanks! unfortunately, I didn’t know about this policy and only applied to Drew… but maybe this information will help some of those who applied to multiple NJMS feeder schools

I called a few schools for updates earlier today, and thought I’d share my findings:

ROCHESTER - won’t be sending out interview notifications for another 1-2 weeks b/c there was a delay in the reviewing process (they weren’t very specific about what happened); previous years interviews were around January 31st

CWRU - will be holding interviews March 21-22; will invite 70 and choose 20-25

DREXEL - send notifications late January, interview late February & early March; previous years’ stats: ~2200 applied, ~2100 met requirements, ~635 forwarded to medical school, 125 called for interviews (13 declined to interview), 64 accepted

I did forget to ask about stats for Rochester, so if anyone has any info, please share

@sajju786 - Just curious to see how you came up with this number. Per UMKC website (https://finaid.umkc.edu/cost/) ----> Undergraduate Cost of Attendance – the total cost of attendance for a non-resident(OOS) undergrad/year comes out to $38,420. Based on this…shouldn’t the approximate cost for the 1st two years(of the 6 years) be around ~80K? Beyond this…do you know how much would the total cost of attendance come out to be for each of the 4 remaining years? Curious to understand how UMKC tution differs from other schools such as BU, UC, VCU, Union/AMC, CWRU, Drexel etc? Aren’t they all in the same ballpark?

@zsxBSMD2019 Did Case say when they would be releasing?

@clapadap UMKC costs per each year are given here. IS, regional and OOS

http://med.umkc.edu/bamd/finance/

For OOS 6 year Tuition and fee alone comes to $349,781

@clapadap …if you add Year 1 to Year 6 Regional Tuition Fees + Room n Board it will come up to $365k

@sajju786 - Very few BSMD programs are worth the full cost, but I am in minority on that

Regarding NJMS and feeder schools, this is my understanding and perhaps @GreenPoison can confirm since he went through this last cycle.
If a feeder school selected you for their undergrad but not forwarded your app to NJMS, there is no way you can attend the combined program through that feeder school. You need to go through any other feeder school(s) that may have forwarded your app leading to your eventual selection by NJMS.

If multiple feeder schools forwarded, then you have the option of picking and choosing which one you want to attend undergrad at based on your own personal preferences, like campus, freedom of selecting course work, scholarships, etc, etc. If the selection happened through the forwarding of only one feeder, you got no other option but attending the undergrad there.

@srk2017,

What are those very few programs?
And you applied through only those programs?

For Rochester REMS, alumni interviewer last week told us 1200 applied, they interview 50 and accept 10.

@Cherax No, but per GoldenStateDad’s post #2403, should be coming out this weekend?

@rk2017 …see NJMS website for feeder schools .

http://njms.rutgers.edu/admissions/programs_7_8_year.cfm

@rk2017 is correct. Say for example you get interviews at Drew and NJIT hypothetically. If only Drew forwards you to NJMS, and they select you for an interview, and you get in, you can ONLY go to Drew’s program.

It doesn’t matter whether or not you interviewed at NJIT- you have to be forwarded to NJMS to have a chance of being selected for that particular program.

Please read the policy of NJMS and feeder schools as

Please always do your own due diligence.
Please ignore earlier posts #2422 and #2424.

@DSOF20192023 @sajju786 Thanks. That’s very helpful. So in your opinion is the cost of going to UKMC in genral much higher when compared to other BS/MD programs being discussed in this group?

@clapadap IMHO, you should aim to minimize your total cost for M.D and choose the best option for your situation. 95% of the students get into Medical School via regular UG route. One should always keep that option open. It does not matter where you attend Medical School. As someone said earlier, you get paid the same amount by the payers regardless where you earned your M.D .

That is why payers hire all Caribbean MDs with priority.
Even if you do simple search it is not true, for e.g. payer, MediCorp Inc, has 890 internal medicine physician report https://www.indeed.com/salaries/Internal-Medicine-Physician-Salaries-at-Medicorp,.-Inc and you can see how spread out salary is within same payer.

Just to clarify, the variation in salaries as presented above is based on years of experience, volume of patients, and quality of care. NOT ‘medical school attended.’
