Thread for BSMD Applicants 2019

@brown2024 DD applied to regular UG programs in Engineering, Computer Science and pre-med majors (Biology/Chemistry/ Psychology). She was admitted to all those programs. She is doing a double major in Neuroscience and CS.

@pun2018 Non-health related activities:

Any volunteer activities s/he involved to help any under served or low income group. For example tutoring middle or elementary schools students for free in library or school or community halls

Playing music at elderly home or hospital or hospice

Or any other activity where involved with passion over a long period of time, like any school club, political campaign etc

@brown2024 Things will evolve since only junior now. College courses and the delivery and expectations and efforts differ from HS to College. Interest on BCPM may change.
There are many career choices within Medical related fields like PA, Nurse, Dental, Optometry, Podiatry etc
Non medical few which are useful for career like Math (Actuarial) or Data Science (this year UCB introduced a major in Data Science and 1300+ students enrolled for that major, overwhelming response), Bioinformatics, Bio-Medical Engg or any other engineering major.

Can anyone give me any insight about what the AMC interview is like? Will it be all studnets from Union? Group or single? Thanks! Honestly, we did not expect to get this far so its a little overwhelming!

@@brown2024 Some pre-med students do major or minor in Data Science, Bioinformatics, Genomics or Computational Biology. Other possible Engineering majors are- Bio Engineering, Biomedical or Chemical Engineering for pre-meds.

In for AMC got email today! Pumped!

congrats! @bsmdonly

As @threeslykids32 mentioned, for BU you have interviews with a faculty from CAS (college of arts and sciences) and another faculty (and not just a doctor) from the school of medicine. The CAS faculty can be from any of the wide range of fields of study, Anthropology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, bio, phys, chem, math … So you can’t prepare with any specificity in mind. I don’t think the faculty will grill on their fields of study either. However if for example, by chance you have done or currently doing AP Psych and the interviewer is a psych Prof, he or she may enquire what you studied in the class and probe more out of curiosity, not to trouble you. So it is better to remember some technical terminology or jargon if possible. I think their main aim is to assess your personality and qualities and not your knowledge check.

With respect to med school faculty, the usual grind, what makes you interested in medicine (i.e. is it your own decision or external influence), whether or not you understand what it entails, what effort have you put in to understand the field, your enthusiasm, some general what if scenarios questions, how you may contribute to the improvement of the field and the methods etc.
I think both the assessments carry equal weightage.

By the way the interviews are separate, not together. About 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour one on one with each … Feel free to ask your own questions about their field and how it relates to medicine etc, if you aren’t already aware. Let it be more like a conversation with an intellectual adult, like a friend of your parents.

@sajju786 Did RPI give you an option to move forward with UG admission?

Called UMKC as application status shows not yet processed. They said will take some time to process and will notify via email to student. Interview notifications will be sent out late Jan.

Anyone who got a BU interview, did it update that you have an interview in your portal?

@vmt1975 yes RPI gave an option to move forward with UG but we would not go there from Chicago for UG.

@ZacharyGelfond no update on BU Portal but got an telephone call and email from BU.

Thanks @GoldenStateDad for update on BrownAlum interview.

Thanks @NoviceDad

When did you applied to BU?

Could anyone give insight to Rutgers/NJMS interview process, we already did telephone interview with Rutgers Univ and after interview were told that application would be forwarded to NJMS for further review and interview with NJMS…

When do we expect to hear form NJMS for an interview???

Has anyone applied to Hofstra? Any idea when they will forward the supplement?

@sajju786 I am a bit skeptical that your S was told that his application would be forwarded… Perhaps they said “many applications would be forwarded” or something similar. When they do the phone interviews they are still choosing between the different candidates to forward, it would be hasty to let someone know so early.

@gallentjill

We applied to Hofstra only because they kept sending mails waiving the application fee, priority processing etc. Just heard from Hofstra that UG is confirmed with full ride (~$200K). They are likely to forward supplementals early Jan if shortlisted.

@Cherax … but do you know when we do hear form NJMS for an interview ???
