any international newbies here applying to american BS in 2010?

My twins are international, even though they had been living in the US since they were three months old… According to our immigration lawyer, it would be very soon that we would get our green card, US Permanant Resident, but until then, we are international.
As a result, we got letters from BS that they would not be able to give us FA because we are international, even though their academics and ECs are great.

One got in to Deerfield, without any FA, and the other got into LC, without FA.

Does this make any sense? If you could afford it from the beginning, why did we even apply for FA? I am sure BS knows that.

This is really heartbreaking to me…

Does anyone know any scholarship for middle school students, which allows international students as well? Davidson Scholarship only admits US citizens or permanant residents.
I’d like to search them, so we can apply…

Bump!
I’d love to know!
BS is so expensive! Maybe you can call the school and say you’ll get your green card soon?

Davis Scholars program.

I’m sorry to hear that twinzy, i think admitting the students but not give out FA is worse than just flat out rejecting. What nationality are you? It’s possible that the schools assume that if you are from ____ country, then you can probably still afford it w/o FA.

This makes me angry, (i’m international) since it sounds to me like discrimination against int’l students who are perhaps just as capable, or even more capable, than domestic students.
You can contact the school to see if it’s possible to have a loan, or even ask them to appeal the FA decision.
Davis scholarship is only available at 5 BS upon admittance to the school, 5 schools are Emma Willard (all girls), Andover, Lawrenceville, and 2 more that i forgot.
I’m not sure if there’s scholarship outside of what the schools give out that you can use on secondary school education.

Davis Scholarship Program - Phillips Academy Andover, The Lawrenceville School, The Taft School, Emma Willard School and Westminister School

Since twinzie got waitlisted at Andover, and did not apply to any others that Davis Schoarship is offered, we have no hope??? I kept writing emails to DA and LC, but so far no responses…

ask private foundations if they would sponsor private educations? enter contests with monetary awards? I’m not sure if this is helping you, but i honestly have no experience with this kind of scenerio. Trying my best here. What grade are your twins? You may want to consider reapplying next year if it’s ok with them (and you), you’ll have a higher chance then…

Exoveerotch, my twins are applying for 9th grade. Reapplying next year is certainly another option. By next year, we certainly will be US permanant residents, and applying for FA should not be too hard, right?

I think so. Also, your twins already have the experience of applying this year, they must know the weaknesses and strengths of the applications, the ins and outs of the admission process. Next year I’m sure their profiles will be much stronger, the schools will definitely offer your twins spots with FA.

my thread may be helpful now as I see quite a few international students applying in this upcoming admission cycle
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU GUYS :D
