Something has kept me quite worried and a bit depressed since I got my SAT scores last month; in fact its annoying me so much that I just had to muster some courage in order to communicate my problem here. This is the only SAT Ive taken and my score is only 2100: 800 CR, 630 M, 670 W (73 in the MC and cough6cough in the essay). Right, my low score in the essay is the big problem; I wonder how much does it taint my image and threat my opportunities. What do you guys think, can I make it up with an admission essay? I consider myself very capable of writing a great essay; Im actually very fond of writing in my own way and timing. Of course I wouldnt waste the valuable essay opportunity in a useless explanation of my SAT failure: although I have excuses for my low essay score and objections to this system of evaluation, I dont plan to use them. I accept my score; what I want is a chance to revert it. Can an admission essay be the chance I need? Thanks for your thoughts.

Ah I didn't mention the colleges...well, just consider a wide range; I don't think that info is so important in this case.

So what are you complaining about with that 2100?

I don't complain at all, I'm content with that; I only wonder whether the 6 in the essay hurts badly or can be helped. I admit I was too sappy about this, I guess it hurted my pride hehe.

with an 800 cr, and 73 in mc in wr, the admissions people will probably figure that you somehow messed up, or that 25-minute essay writing is not your thing. i don't think you should worry much though.

What I wanted to read! Thank you both.

tons of schools dont even use the essay yet btw, they just consider the other parts of the SAT b/c they dont believe that the essay is an accurate measure of a student's writing skills... though of course that depends on where you are applying
anyways, you'll be fine no matter what, they'll figure it out, i dont think itll count much against you as the people above me said

you must be a very smart and original person. Highly creative people tend to score low on essays because the system of evaluation is too formulaic. I don't believe it tests a student's true writing ability at all, but just how one can follow some stupid rules.

The writing section, and especially the essay, is the least important section on the SAT I. At least that's what almost all colleges say, so don't worry about it. Many college admission officers don't even bother to download the essay, which shows the regard (or the lack of it) they have for the essay.
