Threatening E mails

I am a new Kenyon parent and am wondering how people are reacting to the threatening e mails the school has received. The first was in August and now apparently there is another one regarding some kind of action tomorrow, September 11. My understanding is Kenyon is one of many colleges and universities that is receiving these, but it's still unsettling me. Does anyone know if this is the first year this kind of thing has happened?

This is all part of some stupid internet extortion scheme by international organized crime. Kenyon is the last place that anything would happen. No one is going to bother finding Gambier, OH, don’t worry about the spam emails.

Also, did your daughter bring a car to school? :)

I’m not quite sure what you mean by spam emails, I’m getting e mails from Kenyon telling ME about e mails they’re receiving. Do you mean they’re receiving spam e mails or I am?

Regarding the car, it’s staying home for now. She has an Ohio roomate with one, so for at least now it’s all good.

It is a well know hoax that also affected many other colleges, walmart stores, and banks. The emails and or phone calls demanded money be sent to offshore accounts or else harm would come. Such emails are targeted spam…the emails from Kenyon are obviously meant to inform you in light of the Virginia Tech incident last spring.

Yeah all those emails were just hoaxes. Kenyon took them all very seriously for safety reasons and reacted very quickly to make sure everything was ok. For all of them they made sure the KAC was safe first and said students could go there if they felt unsafe. Its really nothing to worry about.
