Three Random Questions:

Hello all, I'm on the cusp of submitting my application and would like to get clarification on a few things:

1) For the purposes of financial aid, would being a Russian Jewish immigrant qualify me as an under-represented minority? (As an additional note, I came here at the age of 2)

2) For the purposes of financial aid, if my parents did not attend or complete any higher-educational institution in America, would I be considered a first generation college student? I am not familiar with their higher education in Russia.

3) I understand that after submitting your complete application package, they email you some information for application tracking and updates. Is this accurate, and if so, how soon can I expect this email after they have received my package?

Thanks a lot in advance!!

1) No. URMs are typically African American, Native, or Hispanic. At a school like Columbia, or any school in New York, Russian Jews are pretty well represented.

2) Probably.

3) When I applied, and this was three years ago, they did notify me when they’d assembled all of the necessary stuff. But, they never gave me updates. It was just them letting me that they had everything and then, a while later, a decision. Of course, that could’ve changed.

Good luck!
