Three Way Death Match!

"My friend's mother works at a investment company and she says that her co-worker is VP of something (I don't knwo what) relating to investment and stocks and he majored in Economics in UCSD."

Thats pretty weird that he majored in econ, cause econ is not about investing and the stock market. Thats the reason why I decided not to do econ, because I want to get into those types of things.

Like I said, I guess it depends on the courses you take. UCSD is ranked 10 top in econmics over UCLA and many privates. Furthermore, UCSD does have upper division class such as:
171: Decisions Under Uncertainty
173: Corporate Finance
174: Financial Insurance
175: Financial Investments
176: Marketing
178: Economic and Business Forecasting
181: Topics in Finance

Though it may not be concentrated heavily, UCSD does provide finance/investment course.

And I hear that it's not too easy to get management positions with concentrated majors such as Finanace.. ETC..

it may just be rumors..

"And I hear that it's not too easy to get management positions with concentrated majors such as Finanace.. ETC.. "

I would think the opposite.

I'm not too sure about that either because I thought like you did before. But I was researching for careers because I had no idea what I wanted to do and I found out that many VPs and such majored in English and some random majors... weird..

English? That is strange.

Indeed !!!!!!

UCSD has a tremendous academic reputation. Davis has a very solid academic reputation, UCSB maybe just slightly less so.

As far as atmosphere, can only speak about Davis: medium intensity academics ( not highly inense and competitive, but definitely not slacker), apparently offers the most majors of any UC and is the only one with 5 professional schools ( medicine, law, vet medicine, business, education), mellow atmosphere, nice college town (probably not the place to be if you like a lot of 'excitement'), just the place you would like to be if you want a serious, but not crazy-intense school-oriented setting, lots of school spirit, good access to professors, reputedly top-notch access to internships.

As much as I love UCSD, you need to be clear about Management Science. I knew a number of students there who wanted to go into business, chose UCSD, and then found out that the MS major was decidedly NOT the same as a business major. UCSD's economics department is much better for pure economics majors than for those wanting to go into business and finance. The upper division courses with finance in the title, if I remember correctly from friends who took them, are mainly theoretical in nature -- be prepared for ALOT of calculus. Don't believe me -- if you take a tour, check out some of the offices in that department -- most (especially those in grad student's offices) will be covered with mathematical equations.

I have not looked at a catalogue for some time, but the Econ dept. used to have a blurb that UCSD did not provide a business or accounting major, and that MS was neither. If you are looking at an MBA (or maybe CPA), you may want to look elsewhere. If you are more interested in economic theory (with LOTS of CALCULUS), then UCSD would be a better fit.

A lot of the people that have posted in this thread are very ignorant about Davis. I suggest you visit and find out first-hand what the Davis experience is all about.

The fools that said they didnt apply to, or are even considering Davis because of the "smell" are clowns that you shouldnt listen to. They obviously have their priorities in the wrong places and you shouldnt take what they say too seriously. I've been at Davis for two quarters and live in the dorms closest to the animal research stations(where the cows are kept) and, I swear this on myself, I've only noticed the smell two days all year. The first was on the day of moving in and the second was some other random day that I noticed it for some reason. It seriously is NOTHING, the air in Davis is actually extremely clean and refreshing, I guarantee you won't be troubled by the "smell" that all these fools keep referring to.

Now that that's out of the way I'd like to say I was pretty much in the same position as you last year. I got accepted to the same UC's and USC. I ended up going to Davis because SC was too expensive and out of the three UC's Davis was the most well-rounded. Our campus is the best(the only thing SB and SD have on us is location - even that I discount because SD is dead and SB has a half-assed beach and dirty lagoon - our buildings and facilities are top-notch), we have the best sports teams(can you say D1 with consistent wins over Stanford in pretty much every sport, not to mention the only football team - which is FREAKIN' killer, btw), our academics and social life is the most balanced, and IMO(I have no stat on this, only personal experience) we are the most diverse.

I feel bad for dogging on SB and SD(I was considering them a year ago), but people do it to Davis left and right and I feel someone needs to give it back. So come visit Davis and find out the truth about how awesome our school is, we have tons of school spirit and we all love to have fun while still balancing our academics. Davis is seriously a great college to be and you won't be dissapointed if you choose it..

But Im sure the original poster would rather go surfing than cow-tipping.

Because that's all there is to do in Davis, right? Of course.

Btw, the vibrations of our water tower probably cause more surf than there is coming to SB..

Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts everyone. Feel free to keep arguing (which I know you will lol), but I've made my decision. I'm going to take one more night to sleep on it before I make it official...

Thanks everyone.

So what school are you choosing (well thinking of choosing).....I think it will be Davis. Reading your posts makes me think that UCD is where you want to be.

****, I HATE CALCULUS!!!!

damn does this mean I should go to SB over SD?

Once again, thanks for the time everyone. I have decided to attend UC Davis. I guess you called it baumb lol. I have no question that UCD has the most to offer me and is the best fit. Thanks for your opinions and help.

Batman: UC Davis, Class of 2010. GO AGGIES!

megathunder: "SD is dead.."

no way. with the beach 5 minutes away, and the city an easy drive down..
SD definitely has the best social scene

The city of San Diego has a lot to do, but the actual campus is dead...Sometimes I wonder how it is bc it's so close the beach, but I believe it because everyone and every college book says the campus and social life suck.

Congrats batman, you made the right choice ;). Have fun at summer advising!..

I feel bad for u.
