Throw my nephew a bone 600m 600v.. looking.

Just as an FYI, Ithaca is a little less than 6 hours from Boston. It may be in NY, but NY is big!

If he is willing to compromise in terms of location, you might look at McDaniel, Lenoir Rhyne, Allegheny and Guilford, just to name a few other schools. I don't know if they will be affordable private options. I have not looked up their graduation rates, which I do think is very important.

Also, I have heard some nice things about Kutztown University, despite a few putdowns that I have read on cc. I don't know how their science department is, but I know of one student who is a business major, and other that is in a multi media major. Both families are satisfied with their sons' educations there. The price might be okay at 25,000 COA. Their grad rate is not the best either, but most kids have less than 1200 on the SATs.

university of hartford is very good with merit money. my sister has a nice package with about a 1050 SAT. they are really pushing to improve the school, and would love people with higher SATs (btw, a 1200 is a good score!)

Hartford may have good merit money, but just like Quinnipiac, they only meet 66% of financial need, should merit aid be lost, or not enough. Also, the graduation rate is not that great. Huskem, I am glad that your sister is happy there.

York College of Pennsylvania may be a little outside of your geography, but it's private and costs only $20K tuition, room & board. You may not have to sweat the merit aid thing then.

My son is very happy there.

my friend's child is B student, works but I think no ECs, 1000 on the SAT. got enough money to drop college cost to about 20,000 at both Kutztown and Kings in PA. Got into Seton Hall in NJ as well. There are many lovely schools in PA!
At least here in NJ you need a 4.0 in undergrad to get into the P.T. program, so he needs to find a match school where he'll enjoy learning and have a support system if any one class if tough. (though all have tutoring now I think, some schools push them into it and some don't care)
This is the most important thing we did (thanks CC folks!!) - focus strongly on major, class sizes that matched how she best learns, and type of kids she felt she'd relate best with We had a big list of what schools seemed best. We then looked at costs. At the end, we looked at location. Ask him if he'd rather be unhappy and broke, 3 hours from Boston or happy 6 hours away. Which can be a 1 hour 139 dollar flight in some cases.

Check out the Ursinus College web site. They offer great merit aid and have a well respected science reputation. US News... calls it an "A+ school for B students. Located about 30 miles outside of Philadephia.

oldinjersey, was your friend's child instate for Kutztown and Kings?

Kings is in a rough area and the facilities there are terrible. I took the acts there and wouldn't reccomend it.

Someone mentioned scranton and that sounds like a good option for this kid. It's walking distance to three hospitals and very close to other physical rehab centers. Med school placement is close to 100% (their "crown jewel" program). Small, but very nice campus (it's jesuit). As far as aid...about 30 kids from my high school go there a year at least, and everyone seems to get money. I know a B student with 1070 get around 15,000 in merit aid.

Also, if the kid applies early enough, everyone absolutely loves PSU-Main. It's probably around 20k out of state.

COA at Penn State Main is actually just under 34,000 for OOS students!

Just thought of West Chester U in PA. I don't know if they have the program that this student is interested in. COA is around 25,000.
