I just got the summer work for my AP Stats class (long story) and it says that I need a Ti-83+ for the course. I, however, have a much beloved TI-89 that I have found twenty times more wonderful than any of my classmates' wimpy TI-83's in PreCalc.

But, as I look through the stats book, it seemed like a lot of the stuff was specifically for the TI-83; the pictures and directions in the book, etc. I tried to follow some of the examples on my 89, and it was very tough going. (I didn't have my owner's manual with me, though.)

So, should I hit my parents up to buy me a TI-83 just for this course and keep my TI-89 for my AP Calc course, or would it be worth it to muddle through and figure out everything on my different calculator?

ANY input is welcome. I really know zip about calculators (except how to work basic things) and would appreciate any advice.

just buy a cheap TI-83 off sumone in your school...I mean you said that your friends all have them so they must be pretty popular. Our school requires all students to buy a TI-83 (but they have no problem with students having TI-89 or 84's) because of this they're are people that find them or see that sumone threw one out (sum people...) so they see them for like 15-20 bucks. I lost mine this yr, but i was on pretty good terms with oun of the people selling calc' s so he just gave me one...oh and TI-83's are now down to like $64.99. Or you could stay in the same family and get an 84, which has more power and same functions, but i guess that's just anyonther part of the prob. Well good luck,
zumy

I have both (bought the 83+, then later won the 89 at a math contest). I've found that the 83+ is generally more useful because all the important features are more streamlined. This is true especially for statistics; many of the more tedious aspects of AP stat take only a few keystrokes on the 83+ but can be a pain on the 89 (maybe this is just because I'm not that experienced with it).

In any case, buying an 83+ would save you a lot of hassle (I even prefered it for Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics), but I don't know if it would be worth the money. I would advise that you poke around on the 89 for awhile to see if you can find all the features you need, because they should all be there. If not, find a really cheap 83+, used or something. Maybe borrow one from someone who doesn't need it anymore.

i took stat and used a Ti 89. I didn't find it much more difficult. Just go to the TI website and they actually have a stat flash app program. It usually comes standard with all 89's but somehow mine got deleted. Yeh but if i ever got confused i could usually just figure stuff out. The 89 is actually easier to use than the 83 for stat since it tells you what to specifically plug in. Just MAKE SURE you have the stat app off their website.
