TI 89 or Not

My son needs a new calculator, and I was hoping for some advice from current UVA students. He currently is in AP Calc B/C, AP Physics, and will be entering the college of Arts and Sciences with a undeclared major.

In old threads there seemed to some debate whether UVA students were allowed to use the TI 89 for certain tests and classes. Do you think the TI 89 Titanium is worth the cost or would you go with another model?

Thanks

I don't think any distinction is made between graphing calculators in math/science classes. Most either allow them or they don't. Personally, I'd go with the TI-89 (it's what I have) and if he's in a class that allows only the TI-83, he could just buy one off of ebay or something. They're fairly cheap ($40-$50.)

TI-89's should be allowed in all classes. The instructions in a syllabus or an assessment may specifically state that you can only do certain functions with a calculator (as it does in my Statistics class), so your son would be on his honor to, say, not use the TI-89 to instantly derive everything on a test.

Thanks so much for your replies, you guys are great! I'll definately get him the TI-89 now that I know he'll be able to use it at UVA.
