Ticking clock aka time bomb

Application time is approaching, and I'm still floundering in college choices. The college advisors at school would like me to name my top choices by early October (for Nation Merit application). I need some help.

I love Brown, but my financial situation doesn't quite agree. I will apply anyway though.

I'm looking for suggestions of schools that
-are medium sized
-are around some sort of city, even if it's a small one
-are at least somewhat liberal (I'm from Louisiana and would like to get away from total conservatism)
-are not in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama
-are not strict with course requirements
-are diverse

I'm considering pre-med, international relations, or criminology.

Even if the school only offers need-based aid, I'm interested in learning about it. I really need to look into schools that offer other types of scholarships or offer money for National Merit, however.

Thanks in advance.

Why would you apply to schools you can't afford? It's really easy to figure out aprox what aid you will be offered by full need schools by knowing your EFC at schools that use only FAFSA and by figuring out how profile schools will treat you. The calculator on the Princeton web site will give you a pretty accurate picture. If you have a high EFC and your parerents have assets like home equity and savings, they will be expected to pay a considerable amount. If they can't, like many people, or won't, it's silly to waste your time on applications and face dissapointment in April.
