Tied between schools

I'm in tie between schools. I must wait before I receive the final financial decisions, however I want to hear people's opinions regarding the schools that I have applied to. Assuming I get into all of them, which ones would be best for me? Which schools have good academics? Which ones are shaky?

-I want a liberal-ish school, however not too crazy
-An open, accepting climate, I could deal with a nice 1/2 mix of kids
-A good political science/ international studies program that prepares me for grad school
-Definitely NOT a suitcase school
-I prefer the city, but I could deal with a rural setting (assuming there are activities on campus provided)

stats:
job (up to 20 hours a week)
Anti Drug Mentoring (HUDDLE) 4 years
Key Club
Ruriteen
Lots of church activites
Bible Study

I am also sending a recommendation letter from the Youth Director of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church with my application which I believe may help.

I've been accepted to:

Albion College ($8,000/year scholarship)
Baldwin-Wallace College ($7,500/year)
Guilford College ($3,500/year)

I've been wait-listed to:

College of Wooster (I spoke with a counselor and she said that they have received a record number of applications this year, so I feel I may have a chance at similar colleges.)

I have yet to hear from:

Allegheny College
American University

what are your stats?

I’m assuming your GPA/SAT isn’t stellar or at a competitive level.

Well, I could be wrong and If I am, go Tufts or Boston College

Ok I am sorry. My GPA is a 3.38, however many schools round that up to a 3.4. My ACT is a 24. My highest writing score is 11/12, which many schools that I have spoken with feel positive about that.

My friend spoke with Wooster and said that they were looking for a solid A,B student, of which I am.

Skierguy,

I applied and later waitlisted @ Wooster last year, and had very similar stats as well (see one of the threads in there for mine).

I ended up being accepted in April with the rest of the RD candidates. So, make sure you send a letter/email expressing your interest, update your counselor with any stats changes, and you should be fine :)

go to Albion, Guilford is a crazy liberal school

Of those, if you eventually get in I would go to Wooster, or possibly Allegheny.

Don’t get exactly what you mean by this:

Guilford is hardly “crazy liberal.” None of the NC colleges fit that description. If anything, Guilford is moderate and has a very nice blend of students. It’s a Quaker school (although most students aren’t) and has a very friendly, laidback atmosphere. I was somewhat surprised at the sense of familiarity between students and professors, which seemed unusual even for LAC. Greensboro is not really a great college town, though.

Personally, I’d put them for you as

 1. American
 2. Wooster
 3. Allegheny
 4. Guilford
 5. BWC/Albion

I agree that American would be the best choice. Ive visited and loved the city atmosphere, but you are still on an enclosed campus. Plus their IR and Poly Sci is top notch.

I’d vote Allenhengy myself, but why didn’t you apply to Wittenberg, Ceaderville, Muskigum, Ohio Wesleyan, or Dennison? They all seem like better fits to me. Anyways, I know it is past time, but if you can, squeeze in an application to at least one of these. I think you’ll be pleasently surprised.

I should have looked at Wittenburg, however Cedarville is crazy conservative religious and Muskingum is in the middle of nowhere. I hated the layout of Ohio Wesleyan, and I felt I did not have the stats of Dennison.

If I had the stats for Dennison, I would definitely aim for Kenyon!

But yeah, so people say that Guilford are good schools? I’m just confused on which LAC to attend. They all seem the same after awhile…

I think I do prefer Allegheny over Wooster, however I am not really sure which one has better stats. I guess that is opinion…

skiierguy, I looked at a lot of these schools with my son. I think that Wooster has some more places to go to in the immediate area off campus than Allegheny. Don’t know if this is important for you, but I thinking it is a shorter trip to the airport from Wooster. Are you waitlisted at Wooster, or were you just deferred to the regular admission pool? Have you been accepted at Allegheny? Maybe merit and/or financial aid will help you decide.
