So I'm going to be a freshman at UofR and will be dorming in Tiernan Hall (is anyone else?) I wanted to know if it consists of freshman at all because I've been placed in a triple and it is upperclassmen housing. Will my roommates most likely be upperclassmen or would the housing department make sure I'll be with upcoming freshmen? I'd really appreciate it if you could give any input on the pros and cons of a triple dorm room as well.

Since last year, Tiernan hall has been an all freshmen hall. The whole hall is going to be first year students. Your roommates will be first year students as well. Residential life do not integrate freshmen with upperclassmen in the same room their first year.

Tiernan is just like Hoeing hall. They accommodate the same amount of students and the layout is pretty much the same.

I did not live in a triple my freshman year, but I know people that did. More than likely you guys will have to bunk your beds to provide more space. The triples are not anything special. They are regular double rooms in the quad that houses three people instead of two. It can be a very positive thing in that you will have somebody extra to room and make friends with. It has also been studied and students in triples have been shown to perform better their first year on average than students who are in doubles (according to ResLife). In my freshman hall last year (I’m an RA), I had about 2 or 3 rooms in my floor that were triples. I noticed that the students all got along just fine and the triples thing turned into them being best friends.

Per the Dean, when they survey kids who were in triples, they have higher grades, more friends and are happier. His joke is that it must be because they want to spend more time out of the room.

The rooms are easily large enough for 3 people.
