And hugcheck picked up on Yang’s disdain for Americans as evidenced by his description of our mannerisms. His word choice would seem to indicate he thinks that our culture’s custom of frequent smiling is indicative of a lesser or impaired intellect, hence the “sh<strong>-faced” adjective. When is one “sh</strong>-faced,” after all?

<p>So Yang doesn’t want to have to go around practicing putting some grin on his face b/c that’s not who he is.</p>

<p>Compare that to the “disdain” he has for his ethnic roots - </p>

I, for instance, am the child of Korean immigrants, but I do not speak my parents’ native tongue. I have never called my elders by the proper honorific, “big brother” or “big sister.” I have never dated a Korean woman. I don’t have a Korean friend.

<p>Or so-called “Asian values.”</p>

Let me summarize my feelings toward Asian values: **** filial piety. **** grade-grubbing. **** Ivy League mania. **** deference to authority. **** humility and hard work. **** harmonious relations. **** sacrificing for the future. **** earnest, striving middle-class servility.

<p>Gee, I wonder what Yang shows more disdain towards (btw, Yang seems to be one of those angst-driven writers, so he probably has a negative outlook on most anything).</p>

<p>Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.</p>

I’ve noticed in the US that there is indeed a lot of smiling and there’s a lot of smiling between strangers as well. I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing but it is very different from Asian culture. Here, smiling is the norm. In many Asian countries, smiling at strangers is well…strange lol

<p>It’s not the norm in Europe (well, Northern Europe as well).</p>

<p>There’s a reason why Scandinvians and Germans aren’t seen as “warm and inviting” as say, the Italians.</p>

<p>Not saying that they are any less friendly, but their social norms are diff. from the Southern Europeans.</p>
