as of yesterday i had been almost 100% sure of EDing princeton, but today i visited yale and fell in love with it. im kind of hesitant to EA there, tho, as barely anyone from my hs gets in and im not any sort of prodigy or someone extremely special.
so...those of you who were debating princeton and yale- what made you lean to princeton?
and also how have you found the eating clubs? hows upperclass housing- how do you choose it?
also, im not sure how the whole bickering thing works...so id appreciate any sort of explanation.

id really like to decide soon so i can put this decision behind me and leave it to the powerful college gods. those of you who post shall rock my sox, if indeed i am wearing sox.

Really, you shouldn't worry too much about the difference in acceptances, since both schools are extremely selective...apply early where you think you would most like to go...where it feels right. It's not that comparing the early acceptance numbers for schools is not important in deciding where to apply, but when you're dealing with similar schools (at least in terms of selectivity) such as Yale and Princeton, it really depends on which fits you better. If you love Yale, or Harvard, or Williams the most...apply there early...likewise, if you decide Princeton is your favorite of all the schools you have looked at, and your stats are at least within its ballpark, by all means apply ED.

Some good articles (albeit brief) about Princeton traditions, etc. can be found on wikipedia. They explain the basics of eating clubs, bickering, etc.

i suppose ur right-
so just in general, does anyone have anything worthwhile to say about princeton v. yale?
i know its hard b/c you dont know me...but anything would be helpful i guess.

they're both great schools, and similar in a lot of ways, but their settings are about as different as they come. what are your thoughts on princeton vs. new haven? any preference?

yeah, i visited princeton twice and loved it both times. my problem is that im convinced that my first choice is whichever campus im on at the time. you might say then dont apply early, but i know im going to have to choose sometime and i'd rather choose now so that i could apply early (although i know there are people who hate that argument, so if you're one of them, dont yell at me). ive visited both campuses 2x (dont ask) and yale would look slightly better on a pro con list. but something about princeton keeps pulling me back. my biggest reservations abt princeton are 1) the town itself (im from nyc so even tho i want to leave the big city, i still want a town with some life and 2) the eating clubs. also, pton doesnt ahve 4 yr res colleges which is my fave part abt yale. my biggest prob at yale is new haven since it seems rather sketchy...
hmmm
my fave collegetown would be cambridge, but alas im not that into harvard.
i never realized how addictive this cc thing would be. hehe...

i'd say apply to yale EA. that way if you get admitted to both (which would be awesome by itself) you'd still have the freedom to choose either way. ofcourse as a pton '09er I'd love for you to come to pton, if you are fully convinced that is where you want to be...

I was also deciding between Yale and Princeton for the early round and I was all set on Yale before visiting Princeton lol. I think the campus had a big impact on my decision...I found Princeton more appealing because I didn't like all the cars passing through the Yale campus. Princeton also has very good financial aid, which was a factor for me (and this is before Yale made an effort to improve their finaid). And the fact that it is ED made me think that it would give me a better chance, which probably isn't true.

I ended up applying to Yale after I was deferred from Pton and got rejected, and then ended up getting into Princeton after all, so it all turned out well.
I think you should go with your instinct. As long as you gave both schools fair consideration (ie. visits/info sessions/tours), then go with your heart.

Well a lot of the party scene revolves around "the street" which is prospect ave where all the eating clubs are. They have parties and events, many of which are open to underclassmen, a few are "members only." Then there are various student shows practically every weekend. There's also the option of going to Philly or New York, both are accessible by train.

Will you be looking into grad school? That's what conclusively did it for me when I was trying (last minute as usual : p ) to decide which offer to accept. They're both excellent choices - at one point I was leaning towards Yale (I know what you mean, it's a pretty place too : )). I'm considering med school so I just emailed a coupla people at each school about the resources and statistics etc. I also emailed other people at each school questions about music ECs and some other specific clubs I was interested in.

I was pretty disappointed with the response from Yale. I did get some replies, all of them friendly and positive of course. Others simply didn't reply at all. From their careers advising office, I was told that they didn't let anyone see their statistics of their students getting into grad schools, not even admits or current students. O.o

With Princeton, it was exactly the opposite. I got replies from everyone eager to tell me about the school, and who asked if it would be ok if they forwarded my mail to others who would be more knowledgable about specific questions - and soon I was getting emails from people involved in music, service work, and pre-Meds. Pton's advising office has a website full of statistics and application/information packets, and staff posting up questions of the week and suchlike. Princeton just had more of a helpful feel to it, which was a good sign to me.

Plus, if you want to go to law/business/med school, you can hypothetically go to both schools-- under at pton and law/bus/med at yale, but you wouldn't be able to with the other way around...hehe

byerly- lets just say im an asian, and i was heavily pushed to apply a certain somewhere i wasnt really interested in by my mother (and listed engineering as my major to that very non-engineering school).

i know ive asked a lot of questions about eating clubs, and i was a good little girl and read the articles, but im still not really sure how bickering works. and also, do the selective club kids kind of look down on the non selective club kids and the non eating club kids?
