My d will be auditioning at Chicago unifieds next month in Chicago. A problem has arisen with scheduling. She will be finishing one audition at 5 pm and starting a dance call at 5pm for another school. I think it is difficult to switch things around at this point because it will mess everything else up! I called the first school and they said that it will probably be finished before 5. I am concerned that she will be running through the halls throwing on the leotard and tearing off the audition clothes to get there on time! Has anyone else run into this and if so, how will you handle it? Maybe there is something I am not thinking of that she/I should be doing. At this point in the game, I feel like it's all craziness!

It will probably be fine. At most of these places the end time doesn’t mean much because by then they are doing individual auditions and some kids finish literally hours before others. We only had one of those 4 hour blocks at Unifieds take the whole four hours and more because somehow my daughter ended up at the end of the line for the acting auditions. She had long since finished the singing and dancing. But they are very flexible. We saw a lot of juggling and the schools were happy to co-operate.

Let the people at the first audition know that she has another one at 5:00- they are usually very understanding and hopefully will make sure she gets out early. Also, it might be a good idea for her to wear her leotard under her dress just in case.

We were going to be in a similar situation. I called the first school and they told me to ask at the audition if it was possible for her to go first so she can make it to her next audition. In our situation it wasn’t unifieds and I came to the realization that it was impossible to get from Point A to Point B so I shuffled and rescheduled auditions. I’ve heard from another school that they expect this at Unifieds and are all making allowances for such situations.

If you really are in a tight squeeze, you can visit the door proctor for the school that is before the dance call and see if there have been any cancellations that she could fit into so that it wasn’t so rushed. A great tip for Unified Auditions is to become buddies with the person holding the schedule and regulating the door!

There were a number of situations at the unifieds (2 years ago) where some kids where crunched for time and would ask the other kids waiting if they could switch times (or jump ahead). My D did that twice to help out others (one who proceeded to go into the audition room and sing the song my D was planning on singing…fortunately she had a back up song). Most of the kids (and schools) are pretty accommodating.
