I am an incoming freshman, so I'm not sure exactly what to do in this situation. I am currently enrolled in the Cog Sci 1 lecture and the 106 Lab.

Everything was fine with my schedule (no conflicts) until recently. When I logged into TeleBears today just to check on my classes, I noticed that the status for the 106 Lab Section was "(This class has had a time change)."

As a result of the time change, I have a conflict in my schedule. Basically, the only lab sections that will now work with my schedule are 104 and 105 (both of which are full and have waitlists). By the way, all the waitlists for this class are manual.

So what should I do? Should I switch lab sections to 104/105 and forfeit my spot in 106? I would think this is the best thing to do. But is there some way I can trade my spot in 106 with someone in 104/105 (I would think that maybe someone benefits from the time change and would want to change sections)? How likely is it that a new lab section opens up?

E-mail your prof (and the GSIs for 104/105/106 if you know their addresses.) Since they screwed over your schedule, they most likely will accommodate you into one of the sections. I’ll be surprised if they haven’t heard back from some people already, since most schedules have back-to-backs that hardly allow room for a time change.

Is there a way I would know who the GSIs are going to be for those sections? And I feel like emailing a professor about a scheduling matter is not going to yield great results? What can the prof do? I would imagine that profs would not even care much about students and their scheduling…

It’s a manual waitlist, which means it’s the prof, or someone else the prof/department has delegated, handling the enrollment. This screw-up is pretty unfair IMO (I spent two days planning Phase II, man!), and the prof should at least connect you with the person who handles the waitlist to ensure you’re given a place. Usually, professors DO care that their class is managed well. They just don’t like *****y/whiny/incompetent students mailing them all the time! Worry not, he should reply with some resolution.

As for the GSIs, I think they would not be assigned so soon, but you can always try to ask the department/prof, or just get hold of whoever’s managing the waitlist.

Thanks! Like you, I also thought it was extremely unfair that they just changed the time of the section. They didn’t even notify me through email…I was just fortunate enough to log in today to check if everything was fine. Thanks again for the advice, and I’ll probably post the results after the prof gets back to me.
