Time commitment for activities on Common App

Hi -
My son is filling out the Common App and asked me a question I couldn't answer, so I'm tossing it out to the smart folks out there, especially W&M Admissions.

He's in Marching Band. In the three weeks before school starts, they have Band "Camp," which runs 8-12 hours a day/5-6 days a week. Once school and football season starts, they have twice weekly evening practices and performing at pre-games and games and post-game activities. Once football season is over, they have intermittent obligations, to include Thanksgiving Parades, Memorial Day town parades and commemorations, 4th of July parades, etc, but much less frequent extra-curricular practices.

What is the best way to represent his time commitment on the Common Application? Take a weekly average over football season and note that they also have activities during the year?

Thanks!

We understand that many activities wax and wane in their time commitment and certainly understand that many marching bands have multiple commitments. Likely the best route to go is to note the average amount of time he spends with the band each week. Also remember, that the hours per week noted for one activity is not a make or break factor.

Thanks, W&M – appreciate your feedback.
