Approximately how long does it take to get across campus? I have 20 minutes to get from Humanities Lecture to Media Theater. Is that enough time?

It should be fine. Check out this walking map: http://taps.ucsc.edu/pdf/walkingmap.pdf

It says about 8 minutes from classroom unit (pretty close to the Humanities center) to the Media Theater.

8 minutes? Closer to 20 minutes. Humanities is in Cowell on the other side of Hagar. It’s at least a 5 minute hustle walk from Cowell to the Classroom Units.

OP: You can make it, but you will have no diddle daddle time. The actual time it takes you will depend on how fast you walk. It can be less than 20 minutes, but it can also be more. I would walk the path a few times before it matters so that you know the way to go and have that factor removed. I would not trust those times on the walking map.

When I had a class in Crown and then one in Oakes (and only 20 minutes to get between them), I talked to my profs about how I had to leave right at the end of class (not a second later) and that I’d likely be late several times. Never more than about 5 minutes late, though. The only times I always made it on time was when I had a severely sprained ankle and the disability van was helping me get around campus.

Yeah don’t trust the walking map times.

I had a class in Crown (close to Humanities) and had to get to the Music Department (close to the Media Theater) in 20 minutes and it took me about 15 minutes at a VERY rapid pace. The Media Theater is in a weird place though, where there isn’t really a direct path to get there from that part of campus. The map shows a path from McHenry, but it’s pretty hard to navigate through the art department to get there (I’ve tried), especially since it’s all uphill from McHenry.

Like Kender said, try the walk a couple of times before school actually starts. Time it. And if it doesn’t work, talk to your professors and let them know that you’re going to be late.

How’s the walk from Media Theater to Porter?

SUPER easy. Shouldn’t take more than 5-10 minutes. Porter is the closest college to the theater department, which is where the Media Theater is.

What about a walk from Thimann Lecture to Earth and Marine?

Porter’s closeness to the theatre arts area was the original thing that interested me in the college for affiliation.

Thimann is in the same area as Earth and Marine. Takes less than 5 minutes no problem.

You should be fine, especially once you figure out all the secret short cuts. 20 minutes is plenty of time.

could i make it from science hill to the dance studio in 20 mins, realistically? is the bus that efficient?

From my experiences, the campus shuttles are ok. They get packed before and after classes (Aand when it rains). There’s a “schedule” for the shuttles, but don’t rely on them. You can pretty much walk anywhere on campus, although yeah, it’s going up-hill a lot. I personally love walking I love the bridges and just being in the forest :D

There are city buses that go around campus, but it’s encouraged to let commuters take those buses. If you need to take a bus to get around campus, take a shuttle (that’s what they’re there for )

The shuttles are hit or miss. Sometimes they’re great, but they can also be quite awful through no fault of the drivers themeselves. During peak time for classes, not only are you fighting to get on a shuttle, but you’re going to be fighting foot traffic once on the shuttle (this is one of the common causes of a delayed shuttle).

If you get on at a popular stop, there will be a crowd. However, even if you are at a less frequented stop, a popular stop could have already filled the shuttles. The thing you hope for is mnay of those on the shuttles will be exiting at the popular stop.

Walking is, much of the time, the most quick way to get around at particular times of day. The shuttles are good, but they are far from perfect. I used them when the walking path was ridiculous to get from one area to another. For example, getting to Barn Theatre, you are often better off taking a shuttle.

Do avoid the metros unless you absolutely have no choice. It was always frustrating when I had to get off campus and the metros were completely filled with people just heading to classes from on campus.

I urge everyone to NEVER get on a city metro bus unless you need to get off campus (or are off campus trying to get back, obviously). Even if you are running late for class, a campus shuttle is almost always within 2 minutes behind the metro bus, and they’re usually not nearly as full.
Those of us off campus that rely on the metro buses to get to campus and home will thank you.

And also, science hill to the dance studio is a bit difficult depending on which part of science hill you’re coming from, but it should be doable. I’ve gone from science hill to the east remote parking lot in about 20-25 minutes, so it’s definitely possible, just difficult. Also, it should be noted that there’s no bus stop going in that direction to the dance studio. So you would have to get on at Science Hill and get off at Cowell, then walk down to the studio.

Cowell? Maybe should be established which dance studio. I always think of the one in theatre arts and that really changes the timing and direction of travel.

Oh man, I didn’t even know there was one in theater arts! I was thinking of the one at OPERS. If we’re talking about the one at theater arts, then that’s a whole different story and it’s a super fast walk from science hill, no?

I was talking about the one at OPERS, hah.

Yeah, there is. I forgot about the OPERS one until you mentioned it so we’re even, haha!

And yeah, totally quick if it’s the theatre arts one. Not so quick of OPERS one.

Hello everyone can you guys please tell me your GPA and SAT scores you have when you applied to UCSC? thanks!
